Hello, I was just setting up a new pair of speakers when I plugged the source's RCA connectors into the amp while the amp was already on. This produced some incoherent static - nothing too loud as the volume on the amp was only at moderate levels - but I'm still concerned this could have been bad for the speakers. The speakers are so new that I'm not familiar with the sound enough to know if it has changed. Could this have caused damage to them?

Thank you.

Doubtful, if they sound okay they probably are....

Thank you for your response! Looking into it a bit more apparently RCA cables won't be properly grounded as they're being plugged in, which is what caused the sound. Does that change anything?

I have misplugged a lot of stuff over the years causing some awful sounds to come out of my speakers.
no damage yet except to my pride.

And that's the reason it's a bad idea to connect the cables when the equipment is powered or when the source selector is set to the jacks you're connecting to. Also, NEVER disconnect the cables from the input to a power amp when it's powered. THAT can and will damage speakers.

If the speakers sound like speakers still I doubt you did any damage. Hard to know for sure without being there....but if it is functioning and not making particularly bad noises I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't have your gear powered up when making connections....
