Hi,

Can anyone please help me? I am looking at installing a TV in my bathroom and wish to run an in-mount ceiling speaker remotely from it. I don't want to use an amplifier.

Can this be done? Is there any speakers / products to do this?

Thanks!

What audio outputs does your TV have?

It is very unlikely you can drive a passive speaker directly from your TV, without modifying it. If your TV has line level analog outputs then you almost certainly can drive a powered speaker from your TV. A powered speaker is one that has its own amplifier in it. In addition to being connected to your TV via a screened cable, it would also require an AC mains connection.

Some TV's have speaker level outputs on the back where the TV speakers connect to. However these outputs can only drive the smallest of speakers (generally no more than 10-20 watt power handling).

You'll either need some sort of active speaker, or an amplifier.

Thanks for the reply :)

I was just going to purchase a cheap and nasty LCD TV - so not sure yet what outputs it will have. The speaker will be approx 3.5 meters away from the TV.

Installing the power to the speaker is no problem (I have a an electrican mate).

I was told I could use rf speakers and just install power at the speakers. only problem is the ones I was told about are $500!! Too much just for a bit of sound from the TV in the bathroom.

I have also been told to look at computer speakers. What's you thoughts on this?

Do you know of any neat (even ceiling mount?) computer speakers which could be used / plugged into the back of the TV?

Thanks for your help.

Most computer speakers (or multimedia speakers as they are commonly called) have built in amps.

You will need an amp to drive a conventional speaker.
