Speaker Compatibility Question

Hey all,

I was doing some research on speakers and figured I'd post here (You guys seem really knowledgeable =).

I recently ordered Logitech's Z-5500 system for my computer. Yes, I realize I'm not going to get the best range of sound, but for the money (~$215) I'm very happy with the features. The sub contains the amp (I assume, correct me if I'm wrong) supplying 65W to each satellite. The satellites all have a single speaker consisting of an integrated tweeter and midrange; "phase-aligned", whatever that means. And from everything I've read, this means the satellites will do an OK job of reproducing a good range of sound.

I noticed in another post someone suggested the Cambridge Audio S30's for a computer setup which have an input range of 25-100W. Since the Logitech setup allows me to use speaker wire for connections, can I replace two of the satellites with S30's later on? Would they be driven appropriately? Would it be worth it? Would the S30's be appropriate for the close environment of a computer? I'm not an audiophile, my ears are fairly inexperienced and I doubt I would know really really good music vs good music if I heard it.

Thanks!

Andrew

Andrew, welcome to the forum!

The Logitech unit is listed on their website as being able to supply 62W RMS into 8 ohms to the front speakers, but that's with 10% total harmonic distortion (that's a high enough percentage that you would notice it). I might have missed it, but I don't see the power output for something in the range of 1% THD. However, the unit is rated at 8 ohms, and the Cambridge speakers run nominally between 4 and 8 ohms, so it could probably power them. How well it would sound is hard for me to speculate about given the specs.

IMO, if you can't tell really really good music from just good music (which, I honestly think that you could), then stick with the Logitech set-up. Regardless of that, if you're using it just for your computer, then the Logitechs are probably just fine...if not great. That's a nice system, especially when you're sitting close to the speakers like you do at a computer. I have some Creative speakers that cost about $100 that do the trick for me.

No problem, Andrew! Always happy to help if I can.

Quick, yes. Informative, sure. Correct? That has yet to be seen... :D

Remember a speaker is a speaker, so other speakers in the same power and ohm range can be substituted. The Cambridge Audio S30 speakers are efficient speakers with a senstivvity of 90dB and would provide enhance sound to your system. Also, remember the impedance using shown in ohms varies with frequency the S30 4-8 ohm impendance will work fine with your Z-5500 system.

Thy can be ordered for as little as $219/pair from http://www.wildwestelectronics.net/cambridge-audio-s30-speaker.html

Good luck and enjoy ;)
