Does anyone know what wood/MDF has the best acoustic properties?

Just use 3/4" MDF...or 1" for larger boxes...and don't forget the internal bracing.

I have to second JohnA's message. I built a pair once with solid wood (3/4" teak) and while they sounded nice and looked good, sonically I would have been better off with MDF
