Speaker balance (L/R) problem

I recently purchased some KEF XQ5's. I've hooked them up to my McIntosh 7100 and the problem I am having is this:

When the balance control is turned all the way to the left the volume goes lower then drops out completely. Turning the knob toward the right brings the voume back, but does not eventually move all of the sound to the right hand speaker. In fact when I get to the midway point there is equivalent sound coming from both speakers. I have confirmed that I haven't crossed the wires and since I can hear sound from both speakers, I know it is not an issue with the left one.

The speakers are bi-wired and I've checked that connection as well.

Any suggesstions on how I can best troubleshoot this?

It might be a faulty tone control. Try turning off power, then exersize the tone control min to max several times and try it again.

Thanks Joe

I'll give that a try. I've never noticed the problem before, but I happened to turn the balance dial on accident and discovered this.
