Hi I had a htpc set up and just changed computer.
I know have a K9n motherboard using ALC833 sound chip with spdif output.
I had everything working perfectly before but now have problems.

First if I use spdif output and make receiver decode sound should I bother re-installing my m-audio audiophile 2496. Thought I read SPDIF out is passthrough therefore card makes no difference.

I can play dolby digital and ac3 movies and my receiver(yamaha htr-6180) shows 5 speakers in display.

play regular music and 2 speakers show...so far so good.

Now if I try playing DTS music I get a hiss from speakers and 5 speakers flash on receiver.
I went into sound card tools and tested for 44100 and test sound plays.
Tried installing ac3filter and same thing happens.

This is a new install of windows 7 and no codecs are installed. Do I need any since I want it to be passthrough therefore receiver will decode.
Receiver was playing the same dts files perfectly with old setup. Tried installing everything like before...
Using windows media player and media player classic Home theater edition for tests.

Any suggestions. Yes I did google and read many posts but I get more conflicting results therefore more confused than before.
TIA

Did you tick off dts and higher sample rates that your receiver supports in your control panel config options?

Yea, I was about to ask this next, check your ac3filter settings for sample-rate&audio resolution

here are some links of captures I did.
btw I installed my m-audio audiophile 2496 and exact same thing happens.
Only when playing one avi file the receiver shows all 5 speakers.
other avi files and mp4 files stays as pcm.
dts audio files play a hiss.
Installed k-codec ffdshow both 64bit and 32 bit versions and ac3filter.
Tried all one by one to see any difference occurs. damn was working great in other computer.
Could it be windows 7 64bit is being picky. also tried playing files in media player 64bit version.
In WPC even the avi file which plays in media center well plays 2 channels in wpc.
