Sound quality of pro speakers?

alright so a couple times i've considered purchasing pro-grade speakers because of the way they sound at the concerts ive been to (incredible dynamic range, very large sound dispersion, and the overall heavy hitting power they had) what kind of sound quality do these things have? most of what i have heard seem to be able to accuratley render voice without "coloring" it too much and have some serious dynamic range and ultra wide sound dispersion. bad idea? if so why? a lot of them i have heard sound fairly "natural"

Yeah, some "pro" speakers are fantastic. Check out BagEnd, JTR, JBL and Danley. One of our members here (RMK) has his theater decked out in JTR stuff- Technically a pro style speaker. He used to have some really high end gear like Revel Salon Ultima 9er something... he loves them apparently. I'd stay away from a lot of pro stuff, but you gotta listen to whats out there. I almost pulled the trigger on some yammy stuff just to try, but couldn't do it.

i heard an MTX thunderpro system once at a local concert and was appalled by the awesomeness of them, i've also heard alot of peavy stuff that sound fantastic, i know pyle (of sh*t) and pyramid are bad news from reviews though. i've also heard alot of pro subs that had amazing bass, even if they only went down to 35-40hz it was really awesome sounding, so thought i would get opinions on here.

This is a good thread....

I am looking for a set of pro speakers for Live singing aka Karaoke. Is there any recommendation? Better if they are Yamaha but this could change. Thanks all.

yeah, man.. I've really yet to hear a Peavey Setup that I just loved, but to each their own. Theres some really nice gear out there, Pyle and Pyramid are definitely not in that category- Peavey reminds me of Bose for some reason...

You can laugh all you want, but are you gonna recommend any?
i'm no pro speaker expert, which is why i posted this thread, it would probably be better if you went onto a band forum or recording or home studio forum.

All their stuff seems over priced, over hyped, over marketed... I'm just not impressed. I'm not really comparing them to Bose, I'm just saying they remind me of them....

I've heard some Bag End stuff I seriously wanted to bring home. Same with JBL

the experts will show up shortly I'm sure..

Its no different than non-pro stuff. You still get what you pay for. Thinking you might find audio nirvana in pro stuff as a shortcut is just plain naive thinking. The only comparison I've seen that truly is financially favorable is RMK's setup. The JTRs are considerably cheaper than some of the other stuff he's had.

Pro audio speakers can actually get quite pricey when you look at the good stuff. Those aren't cheap setups some of those guys are sportin. Dont expect to spend a few hundred dollars on a pro setup and get all giddy and stuff.. aint gonna happen....

Yes. I recommend you inform us whether they need to be active(built in amplifiers) or passive, size constraints....and budget.
I also recommend that members list their location (it's there in User CP options), so they could be suggested to go down to, eg., Guitar Center on Main St. and listen to XY and Z.
There are many "Pro" type speakers that would compete well with/surpass the SQ of the typical cookie cutter low efficiency, direct radiator "home" type speakers. Though definitely not in the looks/aesthetics department.
Which hopefully you'll be too drunk to notice when singing karaoke ;).

cheers,

AJ

My experience is more in the high-end audio loudspeaker systems. I know Meyer Sound, L-Acoustics, JBL Vertec Line-array and Mini-line-array, Nexo, Electro-Voice, etc. Lower-end PA speakers tend to sound harsh, lack impact, lack upper treble extension (cheaper compression horn drivers typically begin to roll-off at 15-16Khz), and lack uniform response in the 3-6K region. 4K is usually boosted (I almost always cut 4K from the git-go, even when mixing monitors.). I am not familiar enough with a PA speaker costing $500 to recommend one. The EV ZX3 and EV ZX5 passive speakers possess the same compression drivers and woofers from EV's X-Line line array...they are the cheapest EV speakers I can recommend from personal use. There may be other good ones, but from running constant RTA of the venues before and during show....these boxes earn their pay...but they're NOT cheap aside from the ZX_ series.

Not "too big"? Not sure what dimension that is in inches/cm HxWxD, so I'll have to guess what you mean ;).
Small venue (living room?) QSC AD-S82 $360/pr
Slighty larger venue EV ZX1-90 $400-$600/pr Open box - New
Moderately larger venue Mackie C200 $350-$600/pr Open box - New
Basically look for smoothly terminated horns/waveguides rather that the old tech diffraction horns with angular, sharp terminations.
All of them will give up LF extension/output for high efficiency and size. Can't have it both ways passive (IOW, small, high output, low bass output/extension).
Some may be available at a Pro shop near you. Take your favorite CD compilation. Go listen and judge for yourself.
Put them in your main system if you have a chance. You may be surprised.
At how good....or bad, they sound ;).

cheers,

AJ

i heard an MTX thunderpro system.
JTRs are the way to go.

Peavey is alright in small venue, but JTR is great everywhere. The Behringer Monitors are actually very capable for more varied use.

this man knows his stuff. Best concert I have ever heard in terms of SQ was through Meyer speakers.
