Sound proofing ceiling

Hi guys,
Looking for some advice I. Soundproofing my daughters room the house we live in is brick wall single story bungalow with a tile roof. As we are on a hill there is a road that we get some loud infrequent traffic that tends to wake my daughter up.

Most of the the noise seems to enter through the roof as it is below the height of the road. I want to do this cheaply as I don't have the money and I don't want to add a new ceiling as my drywall taping skills arent that good so what I was wondering if I cut strips of drywall to form a double layer on the top of the existing Sheetrock ie on the ceiling side between the rafters, I'd fit it in there tight to the edge of the rafters and caulk it along the edges and then fibreglass insulation on top of that, would that help? I know usually double layers of sheetrock are sandwiched together under the rafters but I don't want to do a whole new ceiling.

Sounds like you have inadequate attic insulation.
Usually traffic noise enters through soffit and/or ridge venting. It then bounces directly into the room below.
An extra layer of attic insulation (no less that 8") will do the trick, and help defer heating and cooling costs.

I agree! Start with adding extra insulation/batting and see what that gets you. It would be much better money spent (for various reasons).

As far as the approach for cutting pieces of drywall and laying them between the rafters, you would still have holes that the sound would travel through. It would be like turning your heat on and then opening a window......:)

Put as much insulation/batting that you can in the attic.
