does anyone out there know of a system that delivers sound to a focused area such that sound can be heard on one side of the couch but be relatively inaudible in the other side?

Someone was designing a SUPER HIGH FREQUENCY speaker that was very localized. If you sat in the "sweet spot" only you could hear the sound. But the person next to you could not. It was ment for people that work in cubicles. Everybody could listen to their own music but it would not interfere with your neighbours. I just don't remember who made it. It most probably cost a fortune.

It operated at something like 200KhZ or 1MHz, but it's a while and I don't recall.

open-air headphones will let you hear what is going on in the room better (but thay will leak a lot of sound).
