Sound Problem Mystery

I have Dish TV with a Yamaha receiver using a HDMI and optical connection. First, on certain channels, I lost sound on commercials. Now, some channels have lost sound all together. The channel may not have sound in the morning and have sound later in the day. The mystery is that the sound through the tv is always fine, it is only the receiver losing sound. Does this mean my satellite box is ok and it is an amplifier problem?

In the Sat box menu, check the setting of Dolby Digital. Make sure you have it set to Dolby/PCM.
Also make sure the Yamaha's decoding is set to Auto.

By the way, why are you using both HDMI amd optical?
HDMI alone should get the job done.

Thanks for the input. The box and receiver are both set as you mentioned. I am running hdmi and optical because I had both cables and figured it would be okay to connect both. The mystery remains. Thanks again for the help.
