Sony VPL HW40ES image persistence

I have a htpc hooked up to my projector and today I noticed something similar to image persistence or image retention. I had a night time city landscape as a background that had a blend of colors with red on the left. Today when I opened a white window I noticed a red hue on the left hand side of the screen. It lines up with the red in the background image. The rest of the screen is white and none of the other colors were retained. I've tried adjusting the colors, picture modes, inputs, turning it off and then on and leaving a white background for 10 minutes. I have not seen this problem before today and I've had the projector since September (1000hrs on the lamp). I'm contacting Sony but would like to know if anyone has seen something similar.
Thank you, Joe

When you display an image, such as playing a movie, is the red hue still there?

My guess is that it's just a bad bulb and a bulb swap might fix the issue. Is it a manufacturer direct bulb or an after market bulb? That can be the issue with PJ's and bulbs. You may get the full rated hours, you may get more than the full rated hours, or you may get less.

The red hue is still there when playing movies. The bulb is the one that came with the projector, purchased brand new. I've never seen anything like this in my past projectors. I guess I don't understand how a projector works and why the color would be burned into the bulb. When I get home I'll see if the problem is still there. Sony asked me to call back today as the projector dept was closed when I called yesterday.

My guess is that it's just a defective bulb. When the PJ is off, does anything look wrong with the bulb?

Try to remove the bulb and clean the area(not the bulb) with a lint free cloth. You can also try a reset, but make sure you write down your previous settings. Also try to hook up a bluray player via HDMI separately and see if you still get the red. Might just be a cable problem as well.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'm going to purchase an extra bulb to try and have on hand. Today I'll try removing the bulb, cleaning the area and resetting the projector. I'll also try running a separate HDMI cable from blurays player and will post updates.

I just wanted to provide an update. I have tried the new bulb, cable and cleaning the bulb area. The color is still there. I'm going to go through Sony warranty. Thank you for your suggestions.

Final update: I sent the unit in for service and they were going to replace the whole optical block but Sony decided to replace the projector.
