Hello everyone,

first post here, and i found this forum through some searches to find an answer for my 'fun' with Sony TVs.

I just bought a Sony Grand WEGA KF50WE620 50" Digital Widescreen LCD TV replacing an older Sony TV (model not known). I connected a HT to it with speakers and receiver and sub through the TV out RCA in the back.

First, when I lower the volume on the TV, the volume on the HT is lowered too. As well, the sound of the HT is so soft compared to the TV. If i had to blast the volume on the TV in order to get decent sound out of the HT, then it kinda defeats the purpose of the HT. So, i went and changed the audio settings on the TV to "fixed" rather than "variable" to solve the issue about the volume of the HT changing with the TV, but still, the sound coming out of the HT is way softer than i thought it should be.

I went and tried this on my old Sony TV, and it did the same thing too!

I also have a cheap Prima TV, but that worked fine tho ! All i did was take the audio out from this TV and put it into the receiver and whatever came out of the TV and HT sounded great.

I have no problems either if connecting the DVD or other sources directly into the receiver. But i just thought that if i took the audio out from the TV that all the audio that passes through the TV should pass through my HT as well at their original "sound level" rather than what's happening now ...

So this leaves me to believe that either ..
1) There's nothing I can do about it because it's inherent in Sony (or maybe other) TVs too, or ...
2) There's something I've been missing to setup in the Sony TVs possibly??

Can anyone help this audio newb ?

Thanks,

Jack

common remotes

Are both your TV and receiver from Sony ? You may be plagued by both using a common volume signal from the remote, so that you can;t lower one without lowering the other... This would explain why you see the problem on two different Sony TV's. You may have to set the HT volume manually

Sometimes "common" can be "too common"

nope, only the TV is a Sony. The receiver, i've tried with a Kenwood and a JVC. I've been able to adjust the volume on the receiver but it's just that i need to max out the volume on the receiver in order to hear something decent out of the satellite speakers of the HT while the TV is being blasted too. *shrugs* ... oh yeah, forgot to mention, i've been sitting up front at the TV and the stand with the HT stuff ... so i've just been adjusting through the machine itself rather than using the remote.

In order to do some simple testing, I've just tried using a set of Logitech computer speakers and plugging the Audio Out from the TV to those speakers (with subwoofer). But the same problem arises as mentioned above. Speakers aren't loud unless the TV volume is increased immensely. I used those same set of speakers on the Prima TV i had too, and that worked fine.

Is there something different about the Audio Out on Sony TVs ?

is there a high/low output switch on the back ? my 30 inch RCA could be swapped between speaker out and receiver out. if there is such a switch, set the TV at a VERY low volume to try it out. The speaker out is meant to provide output to a pair of speakers and may be too much for the receiver to handle. Be careful when trying this out if you do have such a switch.

I'm personally not fond of additional connections and run all audio signals right to the receiver and all video signals direct to the TV. No need to waste money on extra cables and have more junk in the way of the signal. If I were you, the only time I would use the TV volume would be to watch the evening news.... :(

There are only 2 ways to do this as far as I'm aware (and this really isn't a big deal it happens to everyone who sets it up this way):

1 - Use the FIXED volume output of your TV and deal with the difference in volume from the TV and other sources like DVD players (at least until you get a receiver like a new Yamaha or Onkyo that allows you to adjust independent starting input volume levels). This is what I would recommend unless the levels are WAY off.

2 - Use the VARIABLE volume output of your TV, set the levels to be closer to your DVD player and NEVER touch the volume again on the TV (use the receiver only to adjust volume. (I know, "fat chance", which is why I recommend #1.)

In either case, welcome to the world of non-standard line levels - this is certainly not just a Sony issue.

Turn Speakers Off

Hey, I have the exact same TV and you can turn the speakers off and use only your HT's.

You just go in the Audio Menu of the TV and turn speaker off.
