Was wondering if anyone could suggest some tips for calibrating/adjusting the "Custom" picture mode of Sony's SXRD rear projection sets -- specifically, the KDS-50A2020, which I own...
Right now, I'm running the set in Sony's so-called "Standard" mode (there are three presets to choose from: Vivid, Standard and Custom) in which I have calibrated the settings with a DVD calibration/setup disc. The results have been "okay," but Blu-rays in particular are lacking "punch" and "depth" as compared to when I see, say, one of Sony's BRAVIA LCDs in a store running a Blu-ray demo where the films seem to be leaping off the screen -- many have told me it's because I'm using the set's Standard mode and not going into Custom, but when I tried using Custom, it seems the image had "dimmed" somewhat and the color wasn't as vivid as in Standard. So I calibrated in Standard and left well enough alone. Plus, there was the aggrevation of needing to set all those additional "Advanced Settings" in the Custom mode which seemed a bit out of my league -- Standard didn't have these settings.
Now, I am getting ready to order a Blu-ray calibration disc from perhaps DVE and thinking of re-calibrating the display using Custom once more to see if I can make the Blu-rays really "pop" by using such Advanced Settings as "Detail Enhancer" but I have questions for anyone with experience dealing with these sets...
If I use the Custom picture mode, aside from calibrating the usual settings of contrast, color, etc., once I get into Advanced Settings, should I be setting the following? :
Gamma (I have read that possibly "Low" should be used here to bring out shadow detail)
Black Corrector (I have read that this should definitely be OFF because it crushes blacks)
Live Color (I have read that this too should be OFF if using "Warm 2" color temp because it will just jack up reds)
Detail Enhancer (I have read anything from leave it OFF to use the MAXIMUM setting to get Blu-rays to "pop" off the screen)
Edge Enhancer (I have read pretty much everywhere that this should be left OFF to reduce ringing in conjunction with Sharpness control)
...and there is a WHITE BALANCE menu to open up in here, and THAT'S the most confusing portion of my questions here; I know without a proper meter and equipment this cannot be set right, so if I don't have this equipment, is it "okay" to just leave these all at their center default "zero" positions? I have tried -- and I know others do this too -- to copy values from other people and sites such as CNET for these white balance settings but this really makes no sense as all these sets have their own optical blocks and are different.
Can anyone help with these SXRD inquiries?
Thanks in advance.
