I'm looking for a receiver in the $400-$600 price range and I have been considering these receivers...

Yamaha RX-V663

Pioneer VSX-1018AH

But then I noticed this receiver from Sony just came out...

Sony STR-DG920

http://www.productwiki.com/sony-str-dg920/

I hear lots of stuff about Sony making mediocre receivers, but it has all the features I want for the price I can afford.

I have 4 HDMI sources...it has 4 inputs. I have a 1080p TV and it upscales all sources from 480i up to 1080p. It does Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD in 7.1. Is the sound quality really going to be that much different than the Yamaha or the Pioneer? Is there another receiver I should consider. I know audiophiles tend to skew anti-Sony...but this is hard for me to pass up. What do you guys think?

Here's my thinking: buy it from somewhere that will take it back (preferably without a restocking fee) and try it out. If you like it, then your search is over. We can give you advice on specs and such, but your own personal preference is what really matters.

Personally, I'd probably pick the Pioneer because I have been very happy with my 1015 (and I've owned Onkyo and Yamaha). Some people here swear by the 663, so I'm assuming that it's pretty good. My brother always buy Sony receivers, and he's happy with them.

I've owned both Sony and Yamaha receivers and both have done me right. The Sony was a very old one and it was my first HT receiver but it was built very well. I even had it running 4ohm mains at one point in time with no problems. Since you want the 4hdmi in I say give the Sony a try and see how well it powers your speakers. If you notice it getting very hot or going into protected mode while watching movies at your normal listening volume take it back and go with something that has a better amp section like the Yammy 663. I now have the Yammy 661 which is the last gen 663 and it works great as well.

You could just add a switcher. This is the cheapest I have found thus-far. That doesn't mean cheaper solutions aren't available.

This one is a little more, but adds two HDMI ports as well as remote controlability. This is especially convenient if you have a learning remote that you can program the funtions of the HDMI remote into the learning remote to reduce clutter.

Considering you can get the Yamaha RX-V663 for under $400 new it seems perfectly logical to go this route if you where considering purchasing the Pioneer.
