Sony STR-DA9000ES Receiver

I just plunked down a bit of change for an entire new home theatre system, all centered around the new Sony receiver. I've noticed on a lot of other boards that people are not real excited about the Sony units? Does anyone out there have one of these, and if so how do you like it?

The only other "alternative" I was even considering was the Denon 5805, but since it's not released for at least another month, and is $1500 more, I went with the Sony.

Any thoughts?

p.s. I need a unit with a minimum of 2 DVI/HDMI inputs + 1 DVI/HDMI to DVI out, and 3 optical inputs, so that limits me somewhat to what is out there. I also would prefer NOT to go with separates due to rack space limitations.

Thnx

I hope you don't have structural limitation, the 9000 ES apparently is very heavy.

I believe that most of the negative comments on Sony receivers revolve around their lower and midrange products, which are cheaply made and have very poor power supplies. Besides overrating the power output by a large degree, the upper-end Sony products seem to hold their own. If it has all of the features you want and powers your speakers to your satisfaction without clipping, then you probably didn't go wrong in buying it.

when I was shopping it came down to the yamaha RX-Z9, Sony 9000ES and the Denon 5803A...

I chose the Yamaha but the other 2 where also great, I just felt the yammi was the clear winner and didn't have much need for the DVI inputs. But even if I did, I would have still bought the yammi and also bought a DVI switcher box...

Just my opinion.

I never understood why the 9000ES weighs 63 lbs, that's unusually heavy for a digital amp. I read from another forum about the SQ of the 5000ES, apparently these amps sound like tube amps.

The 9000ES uses a linear power supply with a very large torroid transformer. All the other models use a switching power supply, therefore they're much lighter.

Thank you for explaining. I thought all digital amps use switching power supplies.
