I am not particular on either of these ..I just happen to have both...I really want to get a seperat amp and tuner but right now I have these...I only need one of them

I havent spent much time with the Sony. I know its about the same rated in watts but havnt played them on my big speakers

I am thinking I should just sell off the SOny cheap and keep the HK for now..although I like the older HK better..all I need is a 2 channel for music

You said "older" HK. I looked up that model of the Sony and it seems pretty old and I looked up the HK and it seems pretty new.

Does your HK look like this?

If that's the HK you have I'd suggest keeping it. It has preamp outputs so you can use it it as a preamp if you want. I don't believe the Sony has this feature. I also imagine the resell value of the HK would be higher than the Sony because it is a superior receiver.

Again, this is all assuming that the HK looks like the one above. If not, please make sure the model is exactly correct and or take a picture.

sorry I bounced around a little cause I was in a hurry...

I have the HK just like that but when I said I liked older HK I meant the solid black ones like the AVR20 AVR80II ....I was stupid and sold my AVR80 to my neighbor and then went through 3 other recievers before getting the HK3485 and my old AVR80 blows away the current HK ....

I like the HKs before they started getting flashy and ugly...like the current one I have and the models before that..although the black and champagne where not bad either...

I was just curios if this sony was well made as its old and most stuff pre 1995 is decent from Sony....it is a heavy receiver but I havnt put it through any stress ..I will tonight I hope..

I really want to get rid of both and pick up a tuner / amp set ...but may nevr happen..

I am also trying to figure out what the deal is on the DCM TF time frame towers I have ...

I need just good strong stereo system for music...I almost never get to watch a dvd with any sort of volume so there is no point..thats why I went from 7.1 all the way back to just stereo 2/4 channel

Don't use any Sony receiver that's not at least from their ES line of gear; it's simply not a category they're all that great in -- and this is from some experience.

Look around online and you'll see where Sony non-ES receivers aren't really well-received (no pun intended); they seem to do better with TVs and such. I know the one I had experience with exhibited symptoms like knobs physically falling off and just a horrendous lack of sound quality or power.

ha ha ...all my experience is with car audio and I know in that field the ES was the last of the good...

and I know the ES of Sony home was ok but even in the car field the lesser Sony was still good before the explode crap hit the streets..

that is the only reason I even considered it...was because it was old..

Indeed -- now you're bringing back horrible memories! I remember Sony's "EXPLOD" line of car crap...
