I was just given a Sony STR-AV1020 receiver.
It looks pretty nice and works well with the exception that the A and B channels both buzz.

It also buzzes if I plug in headphones and no speakers.

Is this a common problem with this unit?

Is there a simple fix?

I know its not the speakers.
I also know its not a grounding issue.

Thanks

Sony Str Av1020 Buzzing

G'day from south australia,
I have had a sony str av1020 for a number of years. The amp developed a buz or hum that appeared and disappeared on and off for ages. I eventually removed the cover and found that apart from a few dry solder joints the main problem was a loose screw holding the circuit board to the frame. So.....try carefully tightening all the screws you can find around the circuit board. Good luck. It's a great amp.

If you open the cover - make sure it is unplugged first.

Two things come to mind - the dreaded ground loop or a bad interal filter capacitor. You may be able to isolate whether or not you have a ground loop by disconnecting all sources and outputs from the reciever. Leave only the speakers connected - if you still have a buzz it is likely that it is an internal problem to the unit. If the buzz goes away you likely have some type of ground loop going on.

Bandit.
