Sony SSCS5 or Edifier R1280Ts?

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong thread for this question.
Hello, I'm thinking of buying my first nice (for my budget) speakers, and I'm currently trying to decide between the Sony SSCS5 3 or Edifier R1280Ts. Does anyone here have experience with these speakers? Which do you prefer?
I'm aware that the Sony's are passive, which I have no experience with. I know they would need an amp, and I think speaker wire.
Also, If it makes a difference to the choice, my music tastes are very varied, for instance, the other day I was listening to my music on shuffle, and Living Dead Girl was immediately followed by Puff the Magic Dragon, so a 'Jack of all Genres' speaker would be best. I appreciate any advice and suggestions, thanks!

The subforum is fine for your question, altho we do have one for loudspeakers specifically. Some questions...

Why not consider active speakers instead to save the money on an amp?

Might depend what your source(s) of audio will be....so what is that or what are those? A receiver is often a good way to go to combine a variety of functions in one box, especially on a budget. Depends, tho...if your setup is simple it may not be needed.

Just what is your budget for speakers and the amplification (don't worry about speaker wire, that's relatively cheap and easy)? Where are you....prices/availability varies where you are to an extent.

Shouldn't matter what you listen to particularly, a good speaker should recreate whatever audio you want to listen to with reasonable fidelity.

Welcome aboard in any case,

Thanks for the reply lovinthehd!
the Edifier R1280Ts are active, and I've been leaning towards them for that reason, but I saw a lot of reviews singing the praises of the SSCS5, so I thought it may be worth the extra cost if they would be a lot better (or last longer).
My audio sources vary, but usually, it's either my PC or old 3rd gen Ipod nano.
I'm trying to keep my budget at around 150 MAX.

I read too quickly, you did mention only the Sony being passive. Not that familiar with Edifier, for actives I've got a pair of JBL LSR305s, which are pretty nice and I paid $180 for them on a good sale. They also have slightly bigger and costlier brothers. Kali has tested well with our speaker reviewer (shadyJ) so I'd look at those, too. If budget is that limited I'd probably just keep it simple and stick to actives, but I might try and extend the budget a bit too. What's the in-room application, these for a desk top or ?

I'd kind of envisioned them sitting in the corner, being used solely to play music, but they'll probably end up as desktops. Luckily most speakers will probably be an improvement over my no-name, fire charred, tiny desktop speakers ^_^
