Sony isn't exactly known for making world class subs.

Are you using test tones to determine that you are hearing distortion at 40Hz and below? What do the specs say? -3dB at 28Hz? If not, that isn't really that low and feeding it sounds below that could quickly drive it beyond it's capabilities. When it says 28Hz, that could be -6dB or worse, which would mean 28Hz is the ABSOLUTE lowest measured sound it is capable of.

It's not particularly powerful and bass is where power makes a big difference. Also, if it's fairly old, it could be that the surround has deteriorated and isn't supporting the cone.

You have another piece of Sony junk. Here is your problem: ;

Speaker unit
Woofer. 16 cm dia. (6 3/8in) X 1 (Direct copy from the manual).

If you believe that can produce any reasonable sound pressure, let alone at 28 Hz, then I have the proverbial bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

In other words the manual is a fictional as Alice in Wonderland, but not nearly as entertaining.

So your driver is bottoming which is entirely predictable from the manual.

There is no solution except to give that unit a decent burial.
