Sony RPTV flicker issue

I own a Sony KP57WV700 RPTV which I purchased in November 2002. Recently, I noticed the picture flickering intermittantly and, after doing some research, discovered that this problem was/is generic to several models of Sony RPTVs. I called my local Sony tech and he replaced all three CRTs unter Sony's special "extended warrenty" to resolve the flicker problem. Well, now that that has been done, it seems that the black levels (brightness) have gone way up on inputs 6 (component) and 7 (DVI) as compared to the other inputs. So much so, in fact, that dark scenes look washed out. If I try to correct for this with one of the user pic adjustments, then all the other inputs are too dark. I know that this problem" reared its ugly head" after the CRTs were replaced. Is there an adjustment in the service menu which can correct this? Also, on input 6, which I have connected to the component out from my DISH HD receiver, the 1080i picture now looks "soft" instead of sharply focused as it was before the CRTs were replaced. Any ideas?

Ooohhhh... that sucks.

I'm curious about your original problem. I posted a couple weeks ago about a similar problem with my Sony and am wondering if it is the same as yours. Could you please check out my post and see if it is the same as your orginal problem? My blinking only occurs with my component inputs and nothing else... not even HDMI.

If this is a common problem, do you know of others that have had this black-level issue after Sony fixed the flicker? I personally would keep my primary problem rather than mess-up my overall picture quality. I certainly don't want to replace one problem for another!

Sony Flicker Issue

As far as I know, the flicker problem was/is generic only to certain Sony CRT RPTVs. It would literally cause a flickering in the picture, normally most visible in a light scene and usually the flicker would cause a change in hue as well. If your Grand Wega is still under warrenty, you might well want to have an authorized Sony tech check it out or wait until the blinking you describe becomes more frequent. Have you tried another DVD player? The black level issue I haven't seen much on in the various forums but it's really bugging me. I'm soon going to have an ISF calibration on my set as soon as the tubes break in and I'm hoping this will correct the problem. The unfortunate thing is, when trying to set black level, that all of these test discs like AVIA or DVE have different patterns they want you to use, so who's right? My black level is fine for DVD component or Sat S-video or even off analog antenna, but it goes to hell on the second component input (6) and DVI (#7).Very mysterious!
