Sony Receiver A/B spkr switch problems

For years I have had a surround system set up on the "A" part of the receiver.

I am adding speakers to B and want to play all (A & B).

The front A speakers (center R and L) totally cut out when I move the switch to A & B. If in surround mode the rear speakers on A will play in this A & B mode, but not the front R & L.

I haven't used the switch in years. Is it broken or is there something I am missing. I verified the wiring accuracy too.

Nick:confused:

Are we talking about the usual A and B switch for front speakers? I was confused by '(center R and L)' as usually the AB switch is only for the front speakers (not center channel).

It sounds like you have the front speakers wired to front A speaker terminals and the surround speakers wired to the front B speakers (instead of to the surround speaker terminals).

clarifying...

Yes, you're right the center and surround speakers are separate.

The R and L front are A and B is a separate R and L.

When I select the A & B selection (yes, the typical switch on the front), the A speakers cut out.

That is the front speakers on A are at about 10% the volume of those on B. I have to put my ear against them to hear anything.

Are the B speakers of the same model as the As? Typically if you want to use A+B, all 4 speakers must have exactly the same impedance characteristics, i.e. same model. Also, the impedance of the speakers should be 8 ohms abolute minimum, preferably 12 to 16 ohms.

The B speakers are different (Boston Acoustic ceiling speakers) vs those on A (Klipsch KG 2.5).

I did some troubleshooting over the weekend and noticed that when I completely disconnect the B speakers and move the switch to A+B, I get the same result: really low volume from the A speakers.

Toggling surround mode on/off also has no impact.

Still stumped....

It sounds like you have a bad connection in the A+B position.
