Hi: I'm considering switching from my Panasonic to a ps3 to play games on my tv(Panasonic 50"). I have a few questions regarding video and audio quailty

1) Watching blu-ray's which player will reproduce the "best" pic?

2) How good is the ps3 at upconverting dvd's?

3) Audio quality through the ps3 again good/bad quality?

Thanks as usual for your help:).Any other advice will be greatly appreciated!!

If you had posted this last wee we could have made an exchange.

There are advantages to both. The greatest for the PS3 being 480i passthrough.

The greatest for the BD-55 being the IR support.

I know my BDP-BX1 (=S350) has the 480i selection but I cannot find that selection on the PS3. Is it available only when component video output is selected?

2) It is very good, my Samsung BDP 2550 and the Toshiba XDE-500 can do a little better but not by much. I would say it is in par with my HD DVD players.

3) I read some reviews that say it (the slim model) does not sound as good as the stand alone players but I honestly cannot say I can hear the difference.

Now that I have the PS3 I no longer have any doubt how Toshiba lost the format war. I absolutely love this thing so far, and I haven't even bought or rent a single game yet.:D

From what I could tell it is automatic.

I don't mean to hijack your thread Steroguy but I am trying to decide between a ps3 and a standalone bluray player also. How loud is the ps3 when watching bluray's? I know the slim is supposed to be quitter than the original. At one point I had a PC fan hooked up in my cabinet so that it would turn on with my receiver. Most of the time you could not hear it but during quite scenes it would really get on my nerves. My wife even asked, “what is that noise”. After 1 movie I took it out. Anyway if anyone has a ps3 slim, how loud is it?

I can hear the internal fan from where I sit, about 12.5' away, but it is not that loud and certainly not offensive to me. I also use a PC fan to cool my receiver and it is quieter than the PS3's internal fan. I am thinking of getting another one to cool the PS3 so the internal one won't kick it or at least would run at a lower speed therefore quieter.

The PS3 and Panasonic are very similar overall in quality with the Panasonic (perhaps) having a bit of an edge in upconversion.

The Panasonic is easier to use overall. It's a straightforward BD player - no Internet streaming or other features which may confuse things. The remote works alright, but really shines when dumped in favor of a good universal remote. Updates are easy and fairly automatic. It is basically silent in use.

The PS3 is fast - very fast. It is really reliable (as is the Panasonic) and has consistently received firmware upgrades to allow it to remain one of the best BD players on the market. Yet, the remote sucks, many people are turned off by the case design, and it is not as easy/straightforward to use. It can also get to be fairly noisy. But, my 80GB model may be noisier than the newer models out. Yet, in an open room, it is worth noting that the fan is extremely audible during quiet passages in movies. Louder than my projector for sure.

For most of my install work, I go with the Panasonic due to ease of use and overall simplicity and quality.

For my home, and a couple of installs, I've used the PS3. In fact, I've had a PS3 since opening weekend and haven't had issues with it. Yet, I do look forward to getting something that is just a stand alone player at some point so the PS3 can simply be a gaming machine for our home. Yet, there are times when I wonder why I would even care about that.

If you're into gaming, the Ps3 is a no-brainer.
It's video quality is great on blu-ray and fine with DVD.
Audio quality is on par.

Cheers,
Bob

I have both the PS3 and the Panasonic DMP-BD55

I actually have both the DMP-BD55 which I got for a good price on sale even though I already have a Sony PS3(that I've had since launch day).
I love them both, but one thing that bothered me about the PS3 was the 180 watts it was sucking down when playing movies compared to the 20-30 watts the Panasonic consumes.
Also, prior to Logitech releasing the Harmony adaptor for the PS3 I was getting annoyed with using the PS3 remote to control blu-ray movie playback and overall, just integrating it with the rest of the system was kind of annoyance(mainly a moot point now that the Harmony adaptor is available...and yes I have one of those too).
The PS3 is a bit noisy as some have said, but that really did not bother me at all. The PS3 bluetooth remote is pretty good and makes navigating movies loads better.

Even with all that though, I still have to admit that I enjoy navigating movies via the Panasonic better. It is silent and I can't say that I've noticed any significantly noticeable difference between the two as far as play-back quality.

I also own the Panny DMP-BD55 as my blu-ray player (I also have the Sammy BD-UP5000).

I'm not into gaming, but if I was, the PS3 would be right in my rack also.

As for noise and power consumption from the PS3,
it's a compromise that gamers have already made.

But, in a best world, I'll get the Oppo BDP-83 blu-ray player, and also the Sony PS3, both. :)

Help!

I just did a search on the Panasonic DMP-BD55 Owner's Thread,
and I couldn't find anything.

So, I'll post here my issue.

* Last night, I put the blu-ray disc of "Drag Me To Hell" on my BD55, but my player will not play it, after I click on play (the Unrated Director's Cut).
I did try several times, but to no avail! Only the menus were available, but everytime I click on "Play" (top left corner), a black screen would appear and just remained there forever! The display from the player just say "play".

This is the first time EVER that my BD55 would not play a blu-ray disc.
And I must have played over 500 titles on it so far, if not more.

Any idea?
Who is my Savior?

Most probably the culprit is the media itself. Try another BD title first...
...if it plays normally, then you'll know where the problem is, though.

Hi Chuck,

I did exactly what you said, and another blu-ray title played perfectly.

So, the problem is with this title!

I did try again last night, and I spent over an hour with high frustration.
I guess I'll return the disc to the store and ask for a refund...
What a drag! :(
Oh, and that disc is in perfect condition (brand new).

Anyone else try to play that title on their Panny BD35 or BD55?
