Issue since purchased - have no idea why I can hear audio sometimes but other times cannot - nothing changes... just starts working... then stops working

Well you're going to have to share more than that! Is it just playing records where it sometimes works, sometimes, not? Does it do this for all inputs on the receiver? Did you buy both used recently?

Yes to 1 and 2 - bought brand new from Best Buy ( RCVR around 2006, TT 2 years ago )
Most commonly, this occurs after flipping the record over - then I fiddle with this and that ( mostly what you mentioned in your 2nd question ) , including switching the Line button, and powering up and down and up. Magically fixes itself, but not because of anything I do, so I never know what fixed it.

OK, so you are using the TT's built in phono preamplifier, is that right? If that's the case, the phono preamp is shorting out. This could be a cracked solder joint, dirt, loose part, or corrosion in the phono preamp. Since you're switching from phono to line to phono, which sometimes fixes the issue, that action confirms the problem is likely on the menu I've presented. If you have an electronics repair shop in your neighborhood the TT can be fixed in a few minutes.

Could well be the tt's phono stage/circuitry at root. Do you have any other gear to use for testing to see if you can eliminate the tt or receiver as cause otherwise?
