Hey folks. I am looking to buy a new TV. Don't want to spend a fortune. I am seriously looking a Sony KDF-E50A10, rear projection LCD. $2500 Canadian. I would love some feedback on this and Sony TV in general and if anyone can think of a better TV in this price range, please let me know.

I also heard a new model, same TV but without the HD card thing,( which this service may never be available where i live anyways), will be released in a week for a couple hundred less.

Does Sony match with Denon DVD 2910 well??

Thanks in advance

i think it might be the model WITHOUT the memory stick slot.

i was considering this model myself, (but it definitely had to be a sony ... sony is the brand to beat in tv) but im leaning towards the bravia 40" LCD [non projection] thats almost the same price as the 50" rear proj. lcd

Go for it!

Hi Johnny,

I bought the KDFE-50A10 last week and it looks great. I ran the DVE disc and it made a huge difference to the out of the box picture. As with most factory settings, it pushed reds and had some serious contrast/brightness issues. Watching analog CATV is actually considerably better (after calibration) than I expected it to be, based on what other posters said about analog quality. DVD's look awesome and I can't wait to see some HDTV content.

I do have two minor beefs with it though. The "screen door" effect IS noticeable, especially with large areas of uniform colour, like sky etc., but it depends on how picky you are as to wether you'll even notice it. My wife thinks I'm seeing things :)

The other small issue is that it's difficult to run the DVE setup on the Antenna input, since the DVD goes through component. I would like a way to copy settings from one input to another as a starting point for tweaking all the inputs. I just wrote mine down, however, and went from there... plus there are independent settings for each input (3 if you include the "vivid" and "standard" with the "custom")

I hope this helps.

BTW I got mine for $2799.00 at FS. They can definitely do better than their advertised $2999.00 sale price. As for the extended warranty... I got one, but it's a great source of debate on any forum.

Good luck!

I got the Sony TV about two weeks ago and love it. I think the Hitachi 50VS810 is a better set, but tv was too wide for the spot that i had for it (the speakers are on the side). The Hitachi is beautiful. It has a glossy front though, so if you have an overhead light you may have reflection issues. In this price range i think the hitachi is the best set.

As for the Sony, the picture is good. The color levels are turned up pretty high out of box, but with some tweaking you can get a nice picture. I have the tv in a 13x10 room, so i'm sitting pretty close ~8ft. I don't see any SDE from my viewing position. The black levels aren't up to plasma levels, but not bad. The biggest downside of this TV in my opinion is the speed of the tuner...it's very slow. Changing channels, video inputs, etc takes MUCH longer than any other TV i've had. It takes a second plus after changing channels for anything to appear on the screen, and changing video inputs can take even longer.
