I've heard that Sony is going to stop making CRT televisions really soon. Anyone else hear this?

From what I have heard there are several companies going this route, within the next few years.

I know they have discontinued the non flat screen analog TVs a while ago, so it doen't surprise me if they will discontinue CRT TV all together.

Yes it's true. Production should stop by mid 2005 for Sony. The Asian tech/electronics firms have been pouring $billions into LCD panel production capacity. There will be two more plants coming online the first quarter of 2005.

My understanding as that they had ceased production of 15" and 17" CRTs but I'm not sure they have firmly ceased CRT development altogether just yet. I'm sure they have some target dates, but I doubt 2005 is one of them. If I'm wrong, point me to some definitive info and I'll post it on the home page in repentance and credit you... :)

I'm a financial analyst and I have some information at work. I'll try and dig something up next week to either confirm or correct when Sony will stop producing CRT's. Several of the large Japanese firms have announced that they are getting out of the CRT business. Samsung and a couple of smaller Taiwanese firms will be left to pick up the remaining demand. Either way the consumer CRT television in the US is heading the way of the 8 track. Shoot, even Wal-Mart and Target's Thanksgiving Day ads are plastered with LCD TV's.

After reading the conclusion of WideScreenReview's four part series on display technologies I'm not so sure that's such a good thing. I personally think the LCD flat panel displays, or some derivative such as OLED, will be the dominate direct view display going forward. When I have time I'll put together some information and start a new thread for discussion.

This phase-out should make the prices of LCDs and Plasmas a lot cheaper, with more supply. This will also spur more demand as the market gets fewer CRT-based TV options.
