Sony DAV-SC5 compact AV system

I have a Sony DAV-SC5 home entertainment system just out of warrenty. When I put a disc in the unit freezes on the opening titles. The remote does not work nor do the controls on the system itself, play, pause stop and eject do not function. I have to turn off the system to then eject the disc. A friend told me there may be a firmware update. Can anyone help?

These shelf stereo systems are so cheap nowadays, it's going to be more expensive to fix this old system than to buy a brand new one.
