Sony Seams to stepping up their game in to the high end. Are you interested at all/ Its looking like its minus Atmos but we shall see...
I do like the layout of the back. Much more user friendly. I have had Sony's in the past . They were always a good value for the sound they produced. I will Say its quite HEAVY.

It's rear panel is sexy, well populated. Analog inputs ! Love that. But it's a dad-gummed Sony... I wish Harman Kardon would come up with something like this and a traditional A+B power supply. *sigh*

Sony's audio efforts are nowhere near what they should be, though. The content side of the corporate structure has far too much pull, and they put to many restrictions on the electronics' guys.

Stupid stuff like "Walkman" software not supporting Flac until late 2014... A multi-thousand dollar digital media player for digital files on networks, while installing rootkits, and software obfuscating attempts at ripping CDs to computer and network storage. It converts everything, even lossy sources to DSD, but I can't back-up my SACDs. I wouldn't even dare to connect it to my network. There's no telling what shenanigans they'll be up-to, but I suspect it's likely that file deletion/watermarking and data-sniffing stored content is certainly not above Sony's shabby , back-alley thugs' ethics. We are talking about a company that broke privacy laws, and showed what I, and most of my friends and peers, consider highly criminal behavior by compromising people's computers without any right to do so.

Sony's all over the place, with half the company (hardware) trying it's best only to be shorted by the other half (content). It's a two-headed hydra, not a company. As long as they don't realize that the two sides aren't in synergy, but in fact two waring faction within the same family, and put an end to this bull, Sony's threading water, waiting for a tide which will either bring it to shore (With a company split) or drown it for good (letting the content guys have their way and kill off hardware side).

just my two cents.

great post and you hit it right on the head. It's too bad too because they have really good sound and this one in general looks very promising. I was shocked at the weight of it alone. If I could get my hands on one to test 1 I would love to put it through its paces. But alas I know they will not give out stuff like that for review they are so entrenched with Playstation they forget they have other parts of their company. Although PlayStation Store was just sold off to another company to run. Which is what they should do with their movie line goodness knows they lose a ton of money with that. I really enjoy my high end sony blu ray player and my ps3 too bad they don't know how to run a company

I don't think Sony sold off the PlayStation Store, they sold off Sony Online Entertainment which is their PC Division (PC Games) I don't think Sony would sell off one of their few profitable divisions, specifically because their cloud based game streaming service is such an integral part of the plan.

As for the Sony Receiver, I don't think any receiver should advertise 4K at this point if it can't do HDCP 2.2. We all know that is going to be the standard, and if it can't pass the signal, it's pretty much worthless for 4k

It's pretty rare that a receiver will meet the needs of the masses in the "perfect storm" sense.

If Sony were smart enough to add Audyssey XT32 or ARC, more audiophiles might be interested. :D

If they added DIRAC, the tweak'ers would have endless hours of fun.

I've never understood the correlation of DIRAC and meth addiction. :D

I Can say some of their last Gen AVRs sounded very good for the price it was a easy get especially with the height channels.

Most "PEOPLE" don't even know what ROOM CORRECTION is.

Only AUDIOPHILES know about Audyssey, ARC, Dirac, Lyngdorf, etc.

Most PEOPLE would definitely buy Sony AVR regardless of Room Correction if the discount is more than any other major brands (Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer).

The vast majority of Audioholics, AVSForum, and the other HT forums know about Audyssey as does everyone who gets the pitch form a sales person. I was unaware the hearing the term made you an audiophile. :p :D

Knowing when to turn it on and off might qualify though :D

An "audiophile" would know what the Audyssey is used for and turn it off in favor of tuning their system by ear because they have golden ears and that is obviously far superior to using measurements and a computer to establish an ideal listening environment. An "audiophile" would also make their final adjustments by installing a fancy cable to get the sound "just right". :D

Measurements are interesting.
A slight movement of MIC can have large changes in the response in the mid to upper frequencies. These difference are much greater than I perceive moving my ears to similar positions. Are they valid or measurement artifacts?

Most people who use Audyssey never see measurements. Some do it once, some do it many times until they like the sound.
I guess those who do it multiple times are the true "audiophiles". :p
In the end it is all about preferences, which is exactly what happens when a person does multiple calibrations runs.

The MiniDSP 88A thread has folks tuning to get the best flattest rules. Dirac tells me this is better and I spent all this money so it must be better ;)

I still use the original the monster cables for my main speakers. I am clearly not an audiophile :p :D
