Sony Bravia 42" LCD - auto brightness feature

I am wondering if anyone who has a 42" LCD Sony Bravia makes use of the auto brightness feature.

I thought the light sensor would adjust the backlight based on the amount of ambient light in the room. I have a very sunny living room in the evening, and even with thick drapes, there's still a lot of light. But then when the sun goes down the screen is too bright. So obviously I turn it down. Other people in the house don't want to bother, so auto setting the backlight would be a helpful feature for them.

When I turn on the feature, the screen becomes so dark it is unwatchable, even with the brightness set high. Anyone care to comment on whether they use the feature?

I'm not sure where the light sensor is, but nothing is covering any part of the television front panel or sides.

You should calibrate your set, at a minimum, with Avia II disc.

I would calibrate the set to a day setting and a night setting. Simply switch between the two at the appropriate times.

I don't like the auto backlight adjustment on the Bravia, it over compensates and doesn't have fluid action. I have the 46" and can't figure out what is causing it to do that, I want to disable it in all honesty. The last TV I had did something similar, but I was able to find the function and shut it off.

To set auto brightness off:
Place electrical tape on sensor. :D

Seriously, there should be a setting somewhere. Service menu perhaps (although I didn't say anything that could possibly void any warranties.... or sets...)

I know on the xbr4 in the menu under the display tab i think there is a option to turn that feature off. Its right next to the power saving option.

He's right about that, the Avia disk is an awesome tool. After using that the picture on my set was 100 times better than it was after just tweaking it by myself. If you dont want to calibrate it yourself go to avs forum and search for your tv under the lcd thread and you will most likely find some settings that people have spent countless hours tweaking trying to find the perfect picture. I've tried them with only good results.
