Sony BDP S580 Only Sending PCM Signal

I am struggling to figure out why my receiver is only receiving a 2ch PCM signal from the Blu-Ray player when it is set to Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. Nothing is set to "Downmix PCM." Any ideas? Could it just be this disc?

Read you manual and go to the section that tells you how to set the output. It will be an on screen menu.

We can't have the voluminous manuals of every electronic device on the planet in our heads. It is your equipment and you have the responsibility to look it up.

If you don't understand the instructions, post a link to your manual and we will help you.

I'm tired of this site being used by people too lazy to get out the instruction manual and read it.

Well prior to posting I perused the manual and also flipped through every on screen option the unit offered. I also searched this forum as well as the internet. As I mentioned in my first post on this thread I thought I had everything set to send bitstream, but it isn't working, and I am thus confused.

I figured there is probably some quick setting I am somehow overlooking and that someone might be willing to lend a quick tip.

I am tired of people using the internet as a means to pound their chests and insult the character of someone about whom they know nothing.

Even for products that I own, I like to get the electronic version of the manual because I can search it much more easily. You can get the owners manual for your blu-ray player on the Sony website, with the direct link to the PDF file here.

Check out page 22 of the manual. If you haven't already, set the "BD Audio MIX Setting" to "Off." If that is set to on, then HD audio won't be output through bitstream. That doesn't entirely match your original description, but it might be it.

Btw, you asked originally if it might just be the disc. Have you tried more than one since posting that?

Believe it or not that player can not send a Bitstream signal. Leave it to Sony!

On page 26 on trouble shooting it admits it in usual pigeon English.

The HD Audio (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby
TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio,
and DTS-HD Master Audio) is not output
by bitstream.

I do think we should expect posters to at least post a link to their manuals. We really should not have to hunt and peck the manufacturer sites to get, and for some you have to register and then they spam you.

So posters asking for help, please post a link to your manual, it the least you can do for free and I think valuable customer support.

Hi, Mark. You misunderstood the context of that quote from the manual. The quote that you posted is from the "Troubleshooting" section. In other words, if the problem is that it's not outputting bitstream, then the solution is to set the "BD Audio MIX Setting" to "Off."

I don't mind folks coming here and asking for help that involves the manual, because a lot of people don't understand all the terminology and such. Plus, I think that we've all seen our fair share of poorly written manuals, and it takes a level of understanding of the basics (like a lot of us have here) to crack the code.

I will definitely provide a link to the manual in question from here on out. I am doing my best to get up to speed on the terminology and fully understand what I am working with, and really appreciate everyone's patience in the meantime. You guys' willingness to share your knowledge has already proven invaluable to me on several occasions, and I certainly apologize if I caused any frustration.

I had the same problem on Sunday when installing this unit. As usual Sony has to do things a little different to confuse everyone.

I will say this that these Sony BluRay players seem very solid in performance and quality. So far no dvd/buray has passed into its gaping jaws that forced me to do a firmware upgrade.

Thanks for posting the reference to this obscure setting. I almost returned my new Onkyo receiver suspecting that it was failing to decode the DTS HD signal coming from my "perfect" Sony BD player. But, turning the BD Audio Mix setting to "off" delivered superb DTS HD sound to the speakers.

Will this effect any setting setting it to off for you guys who have a Sony bd I have the 570 which has it on the on setting on bd mix audio mix setting. Thanks.
