Sony BDP-s470/570 vs Panasonic BD65/85

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on an earlier thread regarding the Pioneer Elite Blu ray player. Based on the feedback, I have things narrowed down to the following options:

Sony BDP-s470 or 570 vs the Panasonic BD65 or 85.

I do have an ethernet adapter located near the TV stand, so Wifi is not a must but is a nice backup plan should I eventually move the player to a different room.

I stream stream netflix from the TV itself so the slower speed of the Sonys is not too much of a downgrade for me.

From what I can gather-the Panasonic may have a slight edge in picture quality while the Sony has a few more apps available online including the hope of HULU premium in the coming months.

So, I see it as deciding between Sony and Panasonic first and then deciding between the two models from each company as the second step-based in large part on the current prices for the models.

Any thoughts? Anyone have both?

Thanks

IMO, you already answered your own quesiton. It is six of one/half dozen of the other. Both are going to be good and you probably won't find either being much ahead of the other, and they are only differentiated by a few features compared to each other. It is going to come down to which of those minor features do it for you.

The Sony BDP-470 and 570 are 3D capable and can play SACD. I doubt the Panasonic model have a slight edge in PQ. Between the 4, I would go with the 470.

I ended up getting a good deal ($169) on the Sony 570-so I went that direction. Thanks for the feedback folks.

That is an excellent price. Here in Canada even the 470 costs 220 when it is on sale at the Futureshop. Those two Sony models received more than one great reviews. You may want to try some SACD in case they sound good.:D

With the ability to play 3D and SACD you can almost call it an universal player.

I have never actually tried SACDs; however, after reading up on that format recently, it does make me want to pick one up to try.

I'm strongly considering getting a bdp-s570, what are your impressions of it, how is the build quality, picture, sound, etc...?

Can you also tell me if the bdp-s570 can output dvds in 480i over HDMI.

My search results say yes, for both component and HDMI for the 570. I can't remember which outputs, but even much earlier Sony players could. I've also read that the 560 could. So, I think you're golden.

Because this was never a necessity for me, I haven't paid attn, and with that being said, I only remember Pana players historically allowing only low as 480p. However, now I've read some posts that say even Pana players allow 480i today.

It does them at 480p quite well with excellent upscaling; not sure about i; why would you need HDMI at 480i? For sure, it you need 480i, there are component video jacks.

I would want it to output dvd's at 480i so I can let my AVR-1910 do the deinterlacing and upscaling since it does a really good job, but if the sony does a good job of deinterlacing and sclaling I won't worry too much about it. I did some comparisons with my current progressive scan dvd player and the picture looks best when I let the Anchor Bay chip in the receiver handle everything.

I don't know which DVD player you have but I am pretty sure any of the two Sony would play DVD movies at 1080p as good as any receiver with ABT. To tell the difference you would have to use a test discs.

I have to experiment with my Sony BDP-S360 to see if its upscaling is better than the upscaling on my Yamaha RX-V1800. Right now I only have an HDMI cable connected from the Sony to the Yammy. I would need to connect the component video out of the Sony to say the DVD component inputs of the Yammy, set the Yammy to upscale at these inputs and set the Sony output to force video out on its component video. Of course this means I would need to run a Toslink cable to get the audio out.. (starting too sound like too much work  )

My Bell cable box is step-up with both HDMI and component video outputs, the component video is there for just watching TV without engaging the Yammy/surround system and the HDMI is there when I want to use the receiver for driving my surround system.

I may not end up getting a Sony BDP-X70 blu ray player as I keep reading on AVS forum about the problems these players are having with streaming, and that the built in wi-fi on the s570 is somewhat flakey.

I see the RX-V1800 uses the Anchor Bay 1010 chip while the AVR-1910 I have uses the Anchor Bay 1030 chip... I can confirm the 1030 chip does a bang up job on upscaling/deinterlacing, but the only thing I upscale with my RX-V1800 is the Wii, and since that doesn't play dvds it's hard to tell how good of a job it does at upscaling/deinterlacing, but I'm sure it's still good, and much better than the older faroudja DCDi chips they used to use.

FWIW: I got the 570 setup last night and have started putting it through its paces. I really like this player a lot. I have netgear ethernet adapters plugged directly into the electrical outlets by the HT systems and then have the BD players and TVs hard wired directly into those adapters. All that to say, I haven't had to try out the wifi yet.
