have been using the 685 for 9 months and I'm generally satisfied with picture quality, sound production, etc. ( though I have nothing to compare this to ).
Have opportunity to get 3910. ? Will picture quality and sound production be noticeable better- the WOW factor- or negligible ?
thanks for your input.

Not familiar with that Sony but to me the WOW factor is there with the 3910. I went from a Sony 725 to a Denon 2900 and the picture quality is much-much better on the 27" Sony tv. It is also a a way better looking piece of equipment to match my reciever too :)

I had tried several dvd players from Sony to Hitachi, even a nice Marantz (on loan) to me. I finally broke down and purchased a 3910. I don't know about the wow factor, but it was more like I was stunned at first look and listen, and then changing my shorts afterwords!
Oh, the bass management on the 3910 is outstanding in my opinion!
Overall I would rate it 9 out of 10. The Denon link sucks for right now till they get authorized to transmit digital stuff over it... but thats only a issue if you have a 3805 recevier or similar, by Denon (with link).

I can't agree they suck in any way but another fellow traded up to a 3910 from a 2900 and was very pleased in the difference. ;)

It's a gamble. If HDDVD or BluRay comes on line before the end of the year, a 3910 is a lot of money to sink into old technology. :(

I remember before I bought my Sony XBR HDTV I thought that my ancient Hitachi non-HDTV picture was more than fine...I also remember when I thought my 450 watt Pioneer 5.1 Home Theater System sounded amazing...

Then I went into ABT...the rest is history...A month ago I never even heard of Denon, Onkyo, Definitive or B & O...

I knew of Yamaha cause I ride a 2004 Yamaha YZF-R1...and other Japanese sportsbikes...but other than their bikes I didn't know much of Yamaha either...

I thought the Sony Dream System really was a dream system...

I always prided myself in buying the best I can afford even though most of the time I go way over my head and budget...

What I am trying to say is...ignorance is bliss...there is always going to be something better but that doesn't mean what you have isn't great.

Whatever...I'm just in denial cause I spent over $1,000 on a DVD that your calling old technology...

 :(

I think you are actually (probably correctly) assuming that the initial technology will be unreliable and overpriced and are merely pre-positioning yourself to take full advantage of the SECOND wave of that technology... :D
