I've spent a lot of time researching, building and upgrading subwoofers, mainly pro audio and home hi fi. My criterion is simple: I don't want to hear the subwoofer while it's playing, but I want to miss it when it's taken out of the mix (exception being live electronic dance music. EV twin 18" cabs & a sub harmonic synthesizer move internal organs around).
I've heard the smack talk concerning Polk Audio's PSW10. It's true that most brands' entry-level offerings don't quite enthral listeners. It's also true that patience & persistence can pay rich dividends in a system's performance.
I have a fellow audioholic bud that runs a pair of these Polks in both of his systems and they sound good enough, slightly boomy for my pallet but he likes it like that. He thinks I like too much treble, I do like the stick hitting the cymbals and afterwards the cymbal's sizzle, but not overpowering.
My beautiful wife bought me a used PSW10 for my birthday so I'd quit squalling about my GFA555 shooting craps, it powered my JBL Pro-former little passive sub and my beloved Realistic 12" passive sub before that.
It took a couple days of fiddling, didn't just fall into tune but the perseverance payed off. The system sounds great! If I wasn't happy with it, I could fix the Adcom and use a modded Peavey FH-1, I swapped the 15" cheap sounding low power Chinese driver with a JBL 2224 sub. It goes down real low.
Not needed, tho, the Polk works fine. Can I get some thoughts on this? Especially those who've had positive experiences, thanks for taking the time to read this post.

This post doesn't make sense to me.
Well you're welcome. :D

Macabre, no one said you can't get a cheap sub to perform. You could just be really lucky to have a room that works perfect with it.

Enjoy!

It could also be that macabre1993 is accustomed to pro audio subs with their F10 of 40Hz. Of course an actual home theater sub in a home theater tuned cabinet will sound better in a home theater, even if the sub is entry level. This is not meant to be an insult. Most of us have been there, myself emphatically included.

My brother has a Polk sub from the 90's, albeit a higher end one - sounds great. My buddy has (or had, it's been a while since I've visited him at home) a ~$100 Polk sub that I thought sounded incredibly good in his house...and his living room was larger than mine. It's all about what makes _you_ happy, and I'm really glad that you got something that did that.

Thanks for the responses! My listening room has some interesting acoustics. Footprint is approximately 20' by 20', ceiling height another 20'. A dormer crosses the ceiling about 2' West of center. I have a couple dozen burlap coffee bags hanging at strategic locations to minimize unwanted reflections and it does sound awesome.
Didn't mean to come off all defensive, it's just that all the audio forums I belong to advise against the PSW10. I'm happy enough, but I am saving my shekels for either a Velodyne or a replacement for my beloved Infinity SSW210... The Polk will move from system one ( music ) to system two ( home theater ).

Most owners of the PSW10 are happy. I have a couple friends that love them. It's not an SVS Ultra, but if it makes them happy then good. I personally get by on a single sealed sub and sometimes I don't even turn it on. I put my money in the speaker portions of my setup. I'd much rather have a RAAL tweeter than an TC Sounds LMS driver.
