something wrong with my new av receiver?

I just finished hooking up my new cambridge audio speakers to my "new"(open box) onkyo tx-nr609 and I'm thinking I know why it was an open box.
First: After playing my ipod throgh the usb port for about 45 min the ipod freezes up. In the middle of a song it just stops. Frozen on the ipod screen is "onkyo". I have to reset my ipod. OK, lets try blue ray. Starts out great, then after about 20 mins. it freezes up too. This time I cant reset it. I turn it off and on several times but nothing. So I just run the blue ray player straight to my tv again. Everything works fine. Does anybody know if this is more than likely a defect with the receiver? Thank You.

I'd say it's another case of the well known Onkyo HDMI board problem.

Can you take the receiver back?

This definately sounds like a hardware issue of some type and not anything to do with settings or hookup. Time to get the receipt out.

Is your receiver in an enclosure? Onkyo's tend to run hot so if it's not properly ventilated, the freezing could be stemming from that..

yes, I can take it back, but should I just have them send it to onkyo for repair. I can't get anything like it for $233. When it worked it sounded amazing. Thanks.

It is enclosed but it has plenty of space...about 6 inches. And the bottom has vents also.

Return /repair is up to you... I've heard decent and terrible things about Onkyo support. Remember that you have to pay shipping to get it repaired and it's pretty heavy.

And as for nothing being in the price range, including cost to ship it for repair, you may be up to 300 for it. That puts you in the refurb Onkyo 616 or Denon 1712 range from Accessories4Less.com

Good point. I can actually spnd up to $400. Are those still my best options?

If it were me I'd spend an $100 on a refurbished Denon AVR-1713 from Accessories For Less. It's only a 5.1 channel receiver but it has a better feature set.

My experience with Onkyo support is that they are clueless about their products but they at least try to be helpful. If you decide to get it fixed you'll have to pay for shipment to the closest repair depot.

I'd ditch it and get a new unit. With the complexity of today's gear, if it breaks that early in it's life, I realy don'tavde too muc fait in a repair facility to correctly repair it. I ad a orrible experienc ewit a well-rated blue-ray player were the factory sent me three refurbs, all with problems. I've had better eperience with Accessories4less refurbs.
