I,m new to the forum but not to home theater. I just replaced my 10 years old RCA system which I purchased at Walmart for less than $200. That included 6 speakers and the receiver. That was my first surround system and it sounded great. It didn't have all the things a user could tweak like my current one. What I have now is a Yamaha RX- V383 receiver with Yamaha NS- SP 1800 speakers. I think my current set up would be really awesome once I get it ironed out. It's like I have no middle. If that makes any sense. I'm sure I'll think of more later but could use some advice. Thanks

You have the 5.1 Yamaha NS-SP1800 set? OTOH don't know what you mean by no middle particularly, you mean the midrange is lacking or something else? Did you run YPAO to setup your speakers? Not speakers I'd recommend particularly either, but depends on your budget. Can you still return the speakers?

Yes, i have the 5.1 set and i did run the ypao. It does sound like the mid range is lacking. I have not tried manually entering the distances or the levels or adjusting the equalizer. I thought i’d spend some time on the forum before i gave up on the speakers.

Might be worth a try to turn off room correction and see if its closer to what you are used to. Could be some of the fullness you are missing is actually a boost from your room and its ‘corrected’ now.

The midrange would be weak and timid with those Yamaha speakers -- also room correction can stress your speakers at certain frequency ranges. Hope things can work out for you.

Agreed

A bit of math: 10 years ago, $200 corrected for inflation is actually closer to $240
This Yamaha system retails today for $150. Dollar for dollar it would seem this new system as noticeably cheaper and that this very humble budget every dollar needs to be spent extremely wisely to get decent performance. I am not sure that Yamaha did just that.
Here some of picks of budget 5.1 systems I'd recommend:

I use Keepa to track (frequently) changing amazon prices

An improvement in speakers is in order as well. A budget favorite around here is Philharmonic's Affordable Accuracy speaker...change the front three for these would be significant...and a real sub wouldn't hurt....

If I were to go about replacing these piece meal do all speakers have to have the same impedance? My receiver is currently set to 6 ohm to accommodate the Yamaha's. Anything to worry about doing it one at a time?

No particular worry aside from generally lower impedance speakers and avrs may not always cooperate, but you might like to read this article on how to set your avr for impedance. 6/8 ohm rated speakers are generally more avr friendly than 4 or below....
