Some Old Snell Acoustics Speakers I Have...

I have a pair of old (no date on them) Snell Acoustics Type "E" loudspeakers (floorstanding, 33"x14"x11" HxWxD). I couldn't find any info on their site, it seems to be a small place out of MA. I just wanted to know a bit about them. I got them from my father who just said "They were probably top of the line when I got them."

I've got them in my room hooked up to a Cambridge SoundWorks receiver/sub that was from a 2.1 computer speaker setup.

They don't sound great, especially at high volume. I wonder if they'd sound alright with a good with a good amp/receiver/what-ever-you-call this unit that feeds the speakers? I also wonder if they'd be worth anything to anyone.

More-or-less just curious, I may get rid of them if I can't get them to sound better.

I would say that with better amplification they would forsure sound better for example i have a pair of Pioneer HPM 100 and with them hooked up to this cheap Onkyo reciver downstairs they sound like crap but when i hook them up to my system upstairs with my XPA-3 they sound 10 times as good!

You know, come to think of it the way I got this sub/amp was my friend gave it to me because it didn't work. I reset some cracked solder joints inside, so it could definately be the unit. Maybe I'll crack it open later just to see if it's fallen appart again...

I'm currently lusting for the current Snell flagship speakers but for $20K it'll never happen. Give those old Snells the equipment that they deserve and I'm sure you will change your opinion. Unless they are actually damaged or broken.

Do you know anything about the speakers I have?

Okay, I got some quality banana plugs (you don't wanna know how I had them hooked up before), and a quality input cable to the receiver/sub. The speakers sound great.

They still wash out at higher volumes and don't really go very loud, and also there's some very noticeable white noise with no sound playing, but I'm now inclined to blame these faults on the Cambridge SoundWorks receiver/sub that I repaired, and the onboard AC97 sound from my motherboard.
