some noob questions

I am wondering what people think of these speakers:
POLK AUDIO LSi9 2-Way Speaker System
for a relatively small space
using either a Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver or the Yamaha RX-V659 (I haven't decided)
also with these speakers would a subwoofer be advisable or is it not necessary?

basically im in a space-constrained apartment and I am looking for decent 2 or 2.1 sound for both music and home theater purposes. I suspect the V2600 may be overkill but i like the video and HDMI switches especially since I'm going to also try to use my samsung LN-S4095D as a computer monitor (for pc gaming purposes) and watching divx video off my pc.

i find i'm having to consider too many variables with all this and it's a bit overwhelming.

That is a nice looking TV. I am not sure but I suspect that you cant use the PC (RGB) input to view DVD and Cable. The other way around (PC video on Component) will work if you have those connections on the video card and it outputs NTSC signal.

If that is the case, you will have to run one HDMI and one Component cable to the TV, somewhat negating the utility of the HDMI switching since you will have only the DVD signal going via HDMI, if that.

So why not get the RX-V2500 receiver (or any other without HDMI) instead and put the difference towards the speakers?

Cant comment on the Polks but also look at SVS, Axiom, AV123, Aperion, etc for speaker.

The Polk LSi9 is an exceptional quality bookshelf speaker. However, it is rated at 4 ohms which may be a difficult load on a receiver. This may be a non-issue since you’ll only be using it for 2-channel use.

I think the LSis are pretty good. I would definitley look at others as well, but the 9s should do the trick. I don't find the LSis to be ideal for music, as I found them to color the midrange slightly. The tweeters are top notch though, as is the construction of the cabinets. The main drawback to the LSis is the MSRP price...

thanks for the advice

FYI i'm now looking at the Axiom M22ti as an alternative, although it's hard to place an order for something like that sight unseen (sound unheard)
and i know i'll need a sub for those, whereas i was hoping i might get away with the polks without a sub.

Internet direct

If you are considering internet direct, also check out the Onix X-LS speakers (av123.com) and Ascend.
They have some of the X-CS speaker on bstock for just over $100. 2 or 3 of those for the fronts and 1 or 2 X-Subs would be a great start to your HT.
