I'm brand new here! Hi all.
Sony Support sucks. Got my system working by a fluke. Please add comments and assistance.
Bounced email message to Sony:

Hello,

I have discovered by accident that a particular HDMI cable will prevent non-Sony input peripherals from corrupting BRAVIA Sync.

Since purchasing my Sony Bravia television and Sony audio system a few years ago, I have been unable to use a DVD Player, and more recently a satellite set top box because doing so would disable the audio system's ability to produce sound from those speakers. Audio would only come from the television speakers and the audio system would not respond to commands from the television remote control. This was found upon connecting HDMI-only from input peripherals to the television AND ALSO trying the same to the audio system.

My equipment:
Sony KDL-46HX850
Sony HT-CT150
Sanyo DVD Player
Satellite Set Top Box
Apple TV Gen 3

I have read all of your support articles and have attempted EVERY SINGLE suggestion multiple times. I have tried multiple combinations of suggestions, have made every possible system software setting changes in an attempt to get the audio system to maintain communication and synchronization with the television. In every single instance, connecting an input device to either TV OR audio system HDMI port would within 10 seconds deliver a message to the TV stating "Audio System Disabled".

With exception of the Apple TV. This device has never interfered with television/audio system Bravia Sync. Audio has always been able to be produced from the audio system using a television HDMI Port (currently Port 4). Apple TV can also be attached to any HDMI port on the audio system and sound can be reproduced from it, provided the proper input on the audio system is selected.

Since purchase I have NEVER been able to use a DVD player on this Sony combination. I have a Sanyo TV with Sanyo/Panasonic sound bar audio system and sound is reproduced on the sound bar flawlessly. Such is the operation with the satellite receiver. All connections are through the HDMI input ports on the Sanyo television.

I have discovered today that using the included short (1 meter) HDMI cable included with a replacement satellite receiver that my Sony equipment will operate correctly and audio is ALWAYS REPRODUCED CORRECTLY with the HT-CT150. Television remote control operates the audio system perfectly. Also, I attached the Sanyo DVD player to the same cable and once again the audio system operated perfectly. Apple TV worked on the same cable as it always had, perfectly.

WE NEED YOUR ENGINEERING STAFF TO DETERMINE WHAT HDMI CABLE TYPE WILL CORRECT "HIJACKING" OR CORRUPTION OF THE SONY BRAVIA SYNC AND ARC PASS THROUGH WHEN ATTACHING DEVICES THAT ACTUALLY
DO THIS TO THE COMPONENT CONFIGURATION.

Since purchase of my Sony TV/Audio System combination I have used high quality HDMI Cables manufactured by Belkin and Monster Cable from between 1-1.5 meters appx. Cables are marked High Speed or Ethernet with High Speed with gold plated contacts. In the above description, sync is corrupted every single time devices are connected. The "cheap" STB HDMI cable is marked High Speed HDMI With Ethernet. It has no manufacturer marking on it. It is most probably of Asian origin, perhaps from China. This is the only cable that I have found that allows the Sony electronics to operate 100% flawless. As mentioned, I have used television input ports other that the default port 1 ARC to connect the audio system. Confusion and frustration of resetting the TV settings/sync settings upon detaching the problem peripherals was and is solved by a simple and pure luck cable swap.

Can your Engineering staff determine the exact type of cable which your customers can obtain to solve a very frustrating issue that many (as listed on forums in many web sites, and Sony) have experienced for quite some time now?

IMO sounds like the handshake finally worked and nothing to do with the cable. Never buy a pricey HDMI cable.

I don't know really. How do you determine what specific cable will keep this from happening?
None of them are actually very expensive. It pretty much sucks because I accepted it as it-is-what-it-is and gave up trying to use the DVD player. Then the sat receiver did it. Apple TV never did at all. Neither did the old sat receiver. When I scan for HDMI devices in the settings menu of the TV, nothing but the audio system pops up.

Definitely a cable issue. I'd take a dozen of the ones that work if it wasn't a pain for me and the local electronics stores having to exchange random pickings. So far, none have worked to fix this. And I have plenty sitting around in my cable assortment junk drawer
