So what did you ask Santa for?

I was really good this year, but Im not going to get what I asked for for the last 3 years, a barrel of whiskey, I just want either a barrel of Jameson {either 12 year or gold} I will even settle for a barrel of Woodford Reserve {any of the masters}... I'm not going to get it, I know my wife made a few phone calls last year inquiring but never materialized anything... Bj's sells barels of JD {but I hate Jack} for around $9500

Isn't that were JD belongs? :D After you drink it, you're going to s*** yourself and be dehydrated.

I poke fun, but...I just had some last night. :D I'm not a whiskey fan, but I decided to give it a try. It's okay, and I was actually thrilled that after 20 years I didn't get nauseous tasting it (I had a bad experience with whiskey when I was 17), but it's definitely not something that I drink often. At 47% alcohol, it's a lot stronger than I'm used to. After the alcohol burn subsides, though, it has a pretty decent taste to it.

To answer the original question, I didn't ask for anything from Santa. I'm guessing that I wouldn't get anybody that I wanted, though. :)

See I am a whiskey Junky, I only have a drink a week {or rather drink once a week} but its always whiskey, summer time will get me to drink beer here and there, but for our saturday night dinner parties Its whiskey, I have 2 small barrels at the house, that we have had a while which is rebrrled from bottles {so it continues to age while we have it} I originally did 5 1/4 gallons each of 2 affordable whiskies {$20 a bottle since you need about 27 bottles to fill each barrrel, it ends up costing around $1200 for the whiskey and the brls}, it has gone down over the years, but still plenty in there, lol....
I am very fond of Irish whiskey, Jameson, Lockes, tyrconnell, and Bushmills all taste great. If you are ever in the liquor store again and in the mood to try a good whiskey that will not hurt you, try the black barrel Jameson Select Reserve, its about $35 a bottle {some places its less some its more} and in my opinion its the best bang for buck available... I don't like the american stuff as much, some knob creeks, makers marks, woodford reserves, and a few others are OK, but Jack, jim, southern comfort, ect I have no taste for... And I don't care for canadian whiskies much either like crown, sec8nds, forty creek, and canadian club, ect are not my taste, I have drank them all, as I do with speakers I like to test and taste, and I like what I like...

My son asked me {this thanksgiving, hes almost 15} if he could taste the whiskey one time and I told him what my father told me "If you taste it now, before you are a man you will never like it" my father told me I would never appreciate it if I tasted it before I was a man... When your a kid and you taste something strong its gross, my wife said maybe we should let him taste it so he never drinks it, but I wouldn't do that to him, lol... He also wants to learn how to shave with my straight edge razor, my wife is so against this, mostly because she doesn't want to admit hes growing up, and I told him when his skin gets a little stronger he can try it. I am good with the razor and once in a while will give myself a cut...
My wife says our sons are going to have a warped sense of what a man is, they are going to think that they have to drink whiskey, shave with a straight edge, use unscented deoderant, sandlewood soap, and know how to dance and play the guitar.... I tell her that is just if they want to be like their dad, which IMO is fine with me and she agrees .... sometimes...

I'm a beer man, myself. I've contemplated home brewing, so maybe I should follow in Mac's footsteps. :) I liked whiskey the first time that I tried it. The second time that I tried it, I had something like nine shots (five in about five minutes) - Jim Beam. Eeeee. My body decided that was it...for a long, long time. Even smelling it made me feel sick.

Tequila - now, I loved that from the beginning. I'm just not into liquor anymore. I only drank liquor for one reason: to get drunk. That's not my goal anymore, or for several years. I drink more for the taste than the buzz...not that I mind the buzz, though. :D

It may be time to try anejo or reposado tequilas. Even some blanco tequilas have a high flavor profile.

Didn't ask Santa for anything. Dude kind of freaks me out.

Thanks, Barry! But, I think that I'll stick with my relatively low-alcohol drinks. Many moons ago, I had someone invite me to a party with a bunch of high-end "sipping" tequilas. I wasn't a fan of any of them. Tequila was for shooting with lime and salt...and with cute ladies around, when I thought I had a chance. Sitting in my house watching TV, well, no need. :)

You always a have a chance when tequila is involved, I never liked "shots" of alcohol, in my entire life if I drank 10 drinks from a shot glass I would be surprised. Shots are for kids and insecure people with low self esteem, lol.

Whiskey is best neat from the shelf or freezer, maybe on the rocks depending on the drinker, a splash of ginger ale and a lime or a bit of sugar dissolved in a squeezed lemon then mixed over rocks if you want something different, but always in a heavy glass preferably something crystal that contains lead... And you don't want to drink to get drunk with whiskey, I drink water with an orange or unsweetened iced tea with my meal, before the meal I will have a whiskey and after I will have a whiskey, unless i am in the mood for desert then I will have a Grand Marnier straight up in the winter and Smashed in the summer.. If we sit around and talk for a while after dinner I will order another whiskey sometimes, so its a max of 3 drinks over a dinner...

I asked for an 18 year bottle of Macallan. I drink beer and liquor more than once a week. There are good liquors in every category except Tequila IMO. I agree with Adam on that one.

Hey Macddmac,

This kit has great reviews. I don't have experience with it, but have read good things and considering it for myself.
Deluxe Brewing Starter Kit : Northern Brewer

ImcLoud, have you considering brewing your own whiskey?
We have made white dog whiskey and then barreled it {small barrels so it aged VERY fast} while it came out drinkable and we did it a few times it was never "good", I gave my moonshine set up away years ago {poland spring jugs, hydrometer kit, a few air locks, a 5 ga ss pan with a ss bowl that fit as a lid that I soldered two - 1/4" bungs in, one went to a gauge the other to a copper compression fitting, my home made condenser which was a 5ga bucket with a bulkhead fitting in the side a pc of 6" smoke pipe and the copper coil to run from the bowl lid to the bottom bucket tap} it worked very well, we used to use vise grips to hold the lid on, boil her around 178 degrees for a while and we would get 3 jars from 5 gallons of mash around 130 proof, then we wood take it and age it in the charred barrel {mix it down with water first, we used to shoot for 90 proof and brown} it goes in the barrel crystal clear and after 8 months comes out nice and brown... But still we used to use cracked corn, sugar, molasses so it wasn't really whiskey... And believe it or not , it was a lot of work, to process 5gal of mash it took at least 2 hours {to go from water and corn to mash} and then a week of waiting then setting up the still and watching it while it heated and changing the jars, and testing, the first bit {I think the first 70ml out of 5 ga} was useless comes out like finger nail polish remover, and the last 3/4 of a jar is also not good{we used to throw that last bit in the next batch}... So for all that work you got 3 bottles out of a 5ga still, we would mix 3 poland spring bottles of mash and do them back to back it would be an 8 hour day sittinng around the still making sure it didn't explode, lol...

We would mostly mix the shine down to 70-90 proof and make apple cider, some would go in the barrel {which I still have, that will last forever} with some distilled water and be "makeshift whiskey" we also kept some as pure shine, that was terrible... We did this pretty often considering, at least a couple times a year for a handful of years...

My local shoppe sellsthe mac 18 for around $160 {750}, The most expensive whiskey I have on my rack {not counting the collectable ones} is Jameson rarest vintage 2007 I bought 6 bottles for $160 each from TWS about a year ago, at my local shoppe they cost $289 rite now {holiday prices, lol} and most of the year they are around $260, I have 4 bottles left. I do have an open bottle of macallen 30 that was given to me by a friend of mine when I was the best man at his wedding, His father owns a liquor store {now he owns a few of them}, I opened it and wasn't crazy about it, I let people try it when they want to and believe it or not, no one has been really impressed with it way too much wood in my opinion. Whiskey is best around 12 years any longer can hurt the taste if you dont like too much wood, and on the other hand I have tasted 18's and 21's that have had less wood than 9's... Its an art and hard to understand, but fun to taste test, that is for sure.. The mac 30 is around $1200, and you need to order it, if you walk in and ask for it local , expect to pay $1500 for a shoppe that has it on the wall... That is WAY too much for whiskey..
