I recently installed a home theater set up for a friend's parents and something wild started happening that I didn't even think was possible. I'll give a quick rundown of how everything is connected so we're all on the same page.
Components:
Panny LCD
Sony Receiver
Panny DVD/VCR
Cable Box
Cable coax from the wall passes through the DVD/VCR before going into the cable to allow them to record TV onto DVDs.
HDMI connects Cable Box to TV
HDMI connects DVD/VCR to TV
TosLink connects cable box to receiver
TosLink connects DVD/VCR to receiver
So here's what happened. We have the receiver, cable box, and tv all on and watching TV with no problem whatsoever. Now, we power off the cable box and rightly so the tv goes black and the sound cuts off. Next, we power off the TV. Then out of nowhere the receiver starts picking up the signal again and the sound from the last channel we had on starts coming over the speakers. Now, if you turn on the TV, the video from the last channel comes on. Now we can't change the channel or anything, because the cable box is off. The cable box they have is a scientific atlanta and there is some sort of bypass function that was enabled to allow bypass when powered down, which we shut off and still same scenario. Also we do get the full HD signal and digital audio if the last channel we had on did.
Now their cable box is running exceedingly hot and I've urged them to get a new one, because all I can figure is the box is malfunctioning.
Anyone have any other ideas on how this can be happening? Feel free to ask questions if I haven't been clear enough.
