Hello out there-I don't know if this post will pass the moderator litmus test but here goes...I'm the owner of a Denon DVM-4800 5-Disc changer that almost three months ago went on the fritz...using the Boston Audio Society website I found a repair shop in Massachussets called "AudioProz" that after both through e-mail correspondence & several phone calls to them felt comfortable enough w/their supposed diagnostic skills & workmanship that I shipped my unit out to them & to make a long story short these goombahs seem to be Fu***** idiots...not only do they only work by a cash only (check or money order-My first clue!!) think mailing time...yeah..yeah...yeah the owner had pnuemonia...all of a sudden doesn't have enough personnel...looking back now my units in a chop shop that who knows when I'll ever get it out...hindsight I thought I was going to be able to save a bit of money over sending it back to Denon...now I know (boy do I!)-if anyone has any words of wisdom besides the obvious mistakes I've already made please chime in!-BTW-my back up Panasonic unit now no longer will play a CD-Thank goodness the DVD's still play....if anyone has a recommendation for a much better repair shop please reply!-I'm quite desperate

No, I don't have a recommendation for a repair shop, but, have you considered sending an email to that web site about the quality of their advertisers? You should. BAS is a good organization but they need to know about who they recommend. Maybe there was a legitimate reason? Maybe not. Who did you talk to at the shop?

Owner/Propieter/Head Shmuck's name is "Vince" although I'm sure I've talked to just about every body else that's worked there at least once & beleive me I've been VERY patient knowing they have my equipment (balls) in a vice..I will contact BAS...I had thought of that but diidn't know how it would be received (RETRIBUTION...BACKLASH...ETC...ETC...)
P.S.-these guy's don't even have the professional courtesy to call or e-mail that there's an issue that needs talking about for any type of further guidance
or to keep me the slightest bit informed...it's as if they don't give a F*** & don't have the courage to man up & say they can't do it wether it's due to manpower...technical issue's...that's its too big a task...whatever !...please just tell me the truth & fix my unit properly & in reasonable time OR ship it back to me & let me move on!

Well...

...unless it's to the manufacturer's service center, I myself would never mail or ship any of my gear to an "unknown" entity...In fact several years ago a buddy and I drove from LINY to Moonachie, N.J. to hand deliver our troubled components directly to Pioneer...It was a nice day out and it saved the packing/shipping hassles.

I realize you aren't about to drive from Mass. to Illinois, but more often than not, sending things back from whence they came is the least troublesome way to go...and of course you did save all the original packing materials, didn't you? Some mfrs. can supply suitable materials...in most cases, bubble wrap and any old corrugated box isn't quite the way to go.

Most modern stuff requires wholesale parts replacement(entire PCBs and the like) it's no longer as simple as replacing the errant transistor or cap...unfortunately such work can be beyond the abilities of many service shops. Nowadays, without the proper documentation to work with, even isolating the source of the problem can be a daunting task. They may need service manuals, specialized software, etc. and it all costs...guess who get stuck with an inflated bill when all it's said and done...they aren't going to "eat" the expense, especially since they probably won't see your specific model ever again.

Then of course, even if diagnosed properly, they then must get the parts. They have to go to the manufacturer, so that just adds to the turn-around time...and markup.

I have a place I've used with some success for a number of years...they happen to be an authorized SC for some of my stuff, their track record is satisfactory but...the manufacturer can still perform tests/do work that may be required by service bulletins that are ignored or simply unknown to any and every hotshot with a soldering iron.

If I were you, I'd go to the local audio shops and ask around...good, reliable, honest shops get good word of mouth...perhaps one of the local enthusiasts has a place, perhaps he'll tell you you're just better off sending it back to Denon.

I'd check the BBB before sending anything to anyone. You should probably be contacting them right now too. I don't know if I would go so far as to get the police involved, but I'd be that the BAS might know someone who can help you deal with the shop in question, especially if they recommended them.

I dint find a listing for them on the BBB for you. From what I see on the web they look legit. I didn’t see where you said how long it has been that you have been waiting. It doesn’t make it right but sometimes small business do go through these problems. You could always try a 30day demand letter and or get the BBB involved to investigate your complaint. I live in Ma and have used them here before, they are very responsive but there is only so much they can do. If you live in the area you should just drop by, it looks like they are across from the Arsenal mall.

I am an attorney in Massachusetts. If you want, I could fire off a threatening letter to them. You may also want to file a small claim against them which you would do yourself. I would first send them a certified letter (NOT EMAIL) outlining the history of your repair with them, and then state that you believe that their failure is an unfair and deceptive business practice under M.G.L. 93A and that if they don't either send you the repaired unit, or the unit and a full refund of your money, that you intend to sue them for treble (thats the legal word for triple 3 x the original) damages. For added measure, you could cc the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office.
