So my 9 year old girl...

...went to work with her mom the day after Thanksgiving(popular nationwide pharmacy chain). She's in the store office watching a movie on the portable dvd player and coloring her coloring books. Her mom's friend/co-worker comes into the office and initiates some small talk by asking her what she's watching. Kierin(my little girl) tells her she's watching A Bug's Life. Anne(the co-worker) tells her that she's never seen it, but wants to get it for her kids. So Kierin proceeds to tell her, "If my dad buys me A Bug's Life on Blu-Ray maybe you can have my regular dvd." She continues by asking her if she's ever seen HD and when Anne says no, Kierin can't believe it and continues by telling her how much better it is than regular TV and how the color's are brighter and everything looks so much more real! Apparently Anne couldn't believe that she was hearing this from a 9 year old girl and immediately rushed to tell my girlfriend about it and how I'd ruined a sweet little girl by turning her into a tech geek!
Now I did recently buy Ratatouille and Meet the Robinsons for her on Blu-Ray, but I got them cheap! Before my sister moved in with us, Kierin could show her to to work the home theater system. Hell, she even figured out Verizon's new interactive program guide before me(I'm still wrestling with that freakin' thing). This is a smart kid. We finally gave her an e-mail address so she can e-mail her friends and she e-mailed her mom a message saying "Can you take me here..." At the bottom of the message she had managed to use the internet to get the exact address of our local mall! Now I love my little girl and I give her a hard time for being a little too girly sometimes(I'm trying to turn her into a tomboy), but this thing at her mom's work. That really made me proud.

Blu-ray, even kids like the name (and they are doing Disney exclusively for now):D

Yeah, that's going to sell a lot of discs. I really need them to go back and release The Incredibles on Blu-Ray though. It has to be my favorite kid friendly animated movie.

Wow! I am really impressed. Kids love new things. We need more women in our hobby as I feel they can bring good things into it. Hopefully she keeps interest in it as she grows and stays with it (due to your guidance :) ). I feel with more women involved in the design and engineering phases of equipment, we may get user interfaces that are simply... well... more simple.

Guys, you have to hand it to women, they like things easy use and we just don't think the same way they do. Easy to use for an engineer designing a product and the common joe are two totally different things. I feel that women in engineering could help that issue.

I was chuckling to myself reading your post. I can only hope my daughter does the same ;)

Brought tears to my eyes :)

That girl is going to make some guy REALLY happy some day. It ain't often you find a girl these days that really like tech. I happen to be one of those lucky ones

Seriously, I have no life.
That is great. She will not be intimidated by such things in life. A go getter and will succeed in life. You should be proud:D
I wonder if Ann knows how to reset the clock in her VCR, or whatnot.;)

My 5 year old knows his way around a computer already, they give him classes three times a week in pre-k 4, he also has managed to learn his way around the HT. Kids today?.....go figure.:)

I think you should just rename your girl to "Blu Rae..."

You all know someone is going to do this!

Thanks for letting me share that one and for your thoughts on the subject

She's a wonderful little girl who is not afraid of electronics. Heck, if you've seen the remote for my receiver you'd know it's no joke! I forget how smart she is sometimes. Often I fall asleep on the couch on saturday and she will come in, turn all the A/V components on, boot up the PS3 and play Need for Speed Carbon or Virtua Tennis. She never gets discouraged when the HDMI handshake doesn't go the way it's suppossed to. She just patiently turns everything off and starts over.
She was recently tested and shows to be at a 5th grade reading level(she's in the 3rd grade right now). They want to put her in the PACE program next year which is probably a good idea as she does get bored with her regular schoolwork pretty quickly. If they can keep her engaged and interested then it's all good.

Don't hold her back. Boredom is a death sentence for these kids. Maybe she will be an EE:D

Awesome daughter! I have a three year old that I'm teaching how to put DVDs into the DVD player.

Only problem is she keeps all her movies in the carousel.
