So I Went to See a Movie in a Commercial Theater Today..

So you may be asking "why" when you own a fantastic HT. Well here's why.. because Atlas Shrugged was playing and I wanted to gauge audience reaction.

So here's my technical reaction:
Wow.. 35mm film looks just as blurry as I remembered from the last time I watched a film, ten years ago.
It is easy to get spoiled with our XDCams, Blu-ray and 1080P projection.

I went to see Atlas Shrugged on Wednesday at a theater complex in a larger city.
The first things that hit me, compared to my home viewing experience:

1. Picture was dim.. 14 FL is not very bright, especially if you're used to 60+ FL in your home theater.

2. Picture was very soft. When we arrived, they were running some ads that appeared to be from digital sources. They looked better, about like 720P video. But when the movie previews began, the film was running. The picture got grainy and details got soft. Oh, and little scratches and dirt spots appeared here and there..

3. The picture flickers. I forgot just how annoying that flicker is!

4. The sound was honky, irritating and beaming.

While I was there, I got to enjoy inhaling the stench of a dead rat that must have found its way into the ventilation system.. much of the lobbies on the upper level and this theater were filled with the sickening stench.

When we got home, my wife wanted to watch Coraline, on DVD. So we popped it in our upscaling Oppo 83 player and the first thing that hit me was that the text of the opening credits was crisper and sharper than the text on the 35mm distro print we saw in the commercial theater hours earlier. The whole movie was quite satisfyingly sharp, even though we were sitting much closer to our screen and it was taking up a wider field of vision than where we were in the Fairfield Theaters earlier.

And forget about Blu-ray, particularly anything I shot on XDCam and authored myself--those look like 20/20 vision, not even like a proxy for the real thing.

What I'm amazed at is that movie theaters are still stuck on this ancient film technology. We're still subjected to flickering images, fuzzy images lacking in fine detail, and bandwidth-limited audio. Even a modest home theater can best what commercial theaters offer.

The theater we were in had a 20' screen (I counted ceiling tiles and their were ten across on their 24" dimension, above the screen). Even though Atlas Shrugged with made with a RED camera, the print just couldn't do it justice. Not even close. 35mm distro prints are matched by DVD through a good upscaler.

I did not expect film to look so poor after becoming used to digital cinema. But there it is.

So what did you think of the movie itself? I just learned about it yesterday.

Reminds of my experience with "Inglourious Basterds" which for some god-know-why - I decided to waste hard earned $12 to watch it in theater.
Tiny 4:3 screen, horrible distorted sound which wasn't fixed AFTER complaining to some assist. manager.
Add to that Fake IMAX screens and insane - $18 for imax movie tickets and result - If I can't [strike]download [/strike] "borrow from a friend" new movie in good quality, I'd rather pay $30 for VOD for it.

You need to experience a movie in a NEW DLP theater, with updated sound system. I did in Carson City a couple of years ago. Fantastic picture and sound!

Yes, I will only choose to actually go to a theater if it's DLP or IMAX. About $16 and $18.50 respectively here. However, some film experts at another forum would say that my LCOS projector is closer to how film should be presented rather than DLP. I'm sure others may feel differently.

IMO, my setup still blows away the DLP theaters too though. Even though I haven't been to a "normal" theater for several years, opting only for DLP/IMAX, I have decided I am not going to step into any theater of any kind this year. I prefer my system to the IMAX as well.

The only reason I like going to the movies every now and then is NO distractions!
Aside from that, yes home theater systems blow away what the movie houses have to offer.

I had low expectations for the movie's carrying of the theme from the novel, so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be slightly above the level of a trainwreck. It was actually pretty well done. Fortunately, some of the scenes from the trailer were re-shot for the movie.. the trailer performances were Saturday morning cartoonish voices. The movie has more realistic acting.
Ellis Wyatt was powerful. I like his character's portrayal. Also beyond reproach was Rearden's character. He was right on target as I had imagined during reading the novel.
Missing was the foundation, the background of the characters. In the novel, you know who Francisco D'Anconia is, why he became a playboy, etc.. in the movie, you just see him lounging with women on his lap. The movie was like a thousand page Word document, displayed in OUTLINE mode--only the first few words of each paragraph. The movie was a needle. The novel was the haystack.
Granted, they did it in 1 take, with a pathetic budget and in that light, I think they did quite well with it.

We don't have Imax around here, and DLP I've not heard any word of. I'll have to ask the Loewes folks if they have it. THey recently expanded to 16 theaters in the complex.
I still prefer movies at home. No teen idiots kicking the back of your seat, etc. No odor of dead rats for that matter. :)

All of the theaters around here are DLP. I like the rave motion picture theaters but the traffic to get there is usually lame :/

Lets not lose sight of the fact that a properly setup 35 mm projector and screen will walk all over a 1080p digital projector. Even the 4k projection screens I have seen don't quite match a good 35 mm projection. In my opinion, even with our fancy home theaters, we still haven't quite caught up with a century old technology with regard to pure image fidelity.

Yes - a janky theater and a low-budget movie are hardly fair comparisons. A properly projected 35mm movie in a quality theater isn't fuzzy, dim, and flickering. Quality film projection theaters are often hard to find, though. Living in New Hampshire, I would only go to DLP or IMAX as well. Now that I live in NYC, I have a huge selection of cinemas, and there are plenty of excellent ones that I don't hesitate going to.

Yeah, good theaters are tough to find these days; I won't go anywhere near a Regal anymore, but we do have Cinetopia here and they focus on picture and sound quality, really a great experience going there. Good restaurant and wine list too, and they have waitstaff who come and serve you in the "living room" theaters. The Century/Cinemark theaters here aren't bad either.

It's interesting that you went to a theater and discovered this. The replies about the DLP and IMAX setups were interesting also. Sometimes the theater can teach you some things. Sometime ago, I went to the local theater to get an Idea of what 6.1 sound is like. It wasn't quite what I had in mind [based on things I read about it], but it did answer my questions. In my case, anything beyond 5.1 sound is not a high priority.

I'm just glad I live near an Alamo Drafthouse. Any business that will do this to douche bags is a place I want to spend my money at.
