run the LFE throught the fronts (polk monitor 40's) and to my pleasant these thing have a medium sized floorstander's worth of bass response, enough that during LFE heavy scene's i could still feel them as well as hear them, sure it's not as deep as the sub but, i was tired of CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF, i think i will be leaving the sub out of the equation till i get a new one . any suggestions for a replacement sub, i am not going to build one now as i don't have the time or resources, i was the about HSU or velodyne, i saw a velodyne for 199 on AH store, don't know much about it though. my budget is a max of $400, lower if preferable. i am looking for a decent sub that will produce clean LFE and work well with music as well that is not prone to port noise.

That's an easy one. Get a simple sealed enclosure, or preferably two (that may require you to overcome the lazyness and diy). For music at least, and to my ears, they seem tighter, and with room gain and their gentle roll-off they can reach pretty deep. Plus, they're generally less expensive.

I'm curious as to the placement of your sub. Did you do the room crawl while putting your sub at the listeners position to see where the best bass response would be? I used to hear chuff becuase I was over driving the sub to compensate for poor room location? My sub sits directly behind the couch and it goes low and loud without chuff as a result of doing the room crawl.

yes i did all of that and had it in the perfect location my sub chuffs because the port is to small and the sub basicaly becomes noisy below 30hz, i've done some test tones on it and it has a response down to 35hz -like 6dB but any frequency below 30hz turns into port noise. if this says anything, the size of the port on my sub is only 1 inch bigger then the size of the ports on my bookshelfs. i can play music as loud as i want with no noise at all and it sounds great, but music is mostly above 40hz, HT stuff has rumbling down to 15hz. polks previous subs are not very good, their new ones are but if you read through reviews on the psw10 you will see others complaining of port noise.

edit: im liking that mkIII kit, thanks for the link.

i'll ask again are velodynes any good?

Yes, Velodyne makes good subs.

The Dayton Sub120 is on sale right now for $140 as well, but it probably isn't going to get you below 20Hz. Dayton has the 1cf enclosure on sale for $80 - add an amp and decent driver in a sealed config and you'll likely be at or under $400. They also offer a 15" kit under $400 but they appear to be out of stock right now.

This guy is $299 and had a surprising amount of output for that price. It isn't the most accurate sounding sub, but at that price, something has to give: http://www.cadencehometheaterspeakers.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=16&idcategory=2 The 15" version is $399. I reviewed both a while back.

The SVS PB-10 is not sealed and it is closer to $500 shipped, but it is easily one of the best subs in the $500 range. It had good output to 18Hz in my large room and dropped off around 16Hz, which is quite good for a 10" sub.

Its not a simple as yes or no. They make different lines ie DD series, Optimum (old SPL series) Mini series, DEQ series, DLSR, Impact, and VX.If you want good out put below 28hz , the DD & Optimum will be the ones, the DLSR play loud thru the mid. Id look DYI Kits, used, or up you budget 1-200 dollars.

I have the Dayton T1503K 15" Titanic Mk III Subwoofer. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-764

It’s done a fine job for me for almost 3 years. I replaced it with an 18” DIY monster sub this spring. If you like the 15" Titanic, I’ll sell it to you for $500. But I don’t want to ship it and I’m about 5 hours west of you on I84. Let me know.

Velo makes good and bad and I've had both. What they are not is good bang for the buck. Have you looked at the sale Outlaw has on their LFM-1 EX? Or even the smaller Plus? If I were you I'd stretch the budget and go big.

eD has a sealed sub for less than $400:
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_138&products_id=892

And a ported one for the same price:
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=406

Emotiva's 10" sub is still on sale as well:
http://emotiva.com/ultra_sub10.shtm

I've never heard any of em though so I can't say if they're worth it
These two posts are quality. Just read these carefully, do your research and buy, buy buy. You can't go wrong with anything in this section. Find the "appreciation" threads on each of these subs and then read till your eyes bleed... LOL.

I bought the SVS in my sig locally for only $475 and its a monster compared to the crappy little Fisher I was using before. In fact, I just missed out on buying and flipping another SVS cylinder sub that sold locally for $300 the other day. The deals are out there...
