So, do I need 5.1 or 7.1 with the # of speakers

I have 2 fronts, 1 center, 2 rears and a sub-woofer.....Is that 6 and would I need a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver.....

You ar ecurrently set up for a 5.1 system. Five speakers and one subwoofer, which is the ".1" in the "5.1" system.

Just to add to Mark's response, you can go with either a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver. You can set up a 7.1 receiver to output sound to a 5.1 speaker system.
