Small 'Slave Screen' for my projector

I listen to a lot of music on my system, and hate to turn the project every time I want to listen to my AppleTV. I have a second HDMI output on my Onkyo... I was thinking of getting a very small LCD display and using that for when I was to control music and so forth without the projector on.

Anyone done anything like this?

Here is my rack.

Any advice appreciated.

Seriously, I have no life.
No comment on the Munster Power unit.:D

Go to KMart and look for their small LCD TVs. I just bought one for aiming security cameras and it's called Eviant. I think the D is missing, but that's just me.

It has a composite video input as well as audio, comes with a cable for that and has an ATSC tuner built in. It was on sale for $89 when I bought it and they have an available extended warranty that covers dropping and all kinds of other damage, although I'd read the fine print before I take it as Gospel.

The video quality is far better than I expected, or has a right to be. It also has a kick stand, so it doesn't need to lay down all of the time. 7" diagonal and you should have no problem reading the text when you access your files.

I got a 16" flat panel LCD computer monitor for that exact reason, so I wouldn't have to have the projector on to scroll though music, etc. It was something like $150 at Best Buy.

That seems to be the ticket, like a 7-10" display.

Will my pre-pro be able to send the video through HDMI out 2?

Yup but not at the same time as the main out. I'm doing this with my 885. The LCD is HDMI main out and the projector is sub out. There is a button under the panel that will switch it. There are also discrete codes so you can set up your remote to turn on either one when you power up an activity. If you have a URC remote I can help you out.

Yes, I really miss that screen! That is something every receiver and pre pro should have. It is no longer on the Rotels. It is a really nice feature.

Thanks guys, this is a big help. I didn't know that about switching the HDMI out, I tried it this morning.

I kind of want something smaller than a computer monitor though. Just something to have on top of my rack. More like the size of a car LCD or one of those 'computer' picture frames I see in Best Buy all the time.

The Rotel screen size would be perfect. That was a nice feature, especially if you have a projector!

The only companies I know that make lcd's that small with either an HDMI or DVI input are Marshal and Xenarc. The Xenarc 706TSA has DVI and is also a touch screen and there is one on ebay for $389

There are ones with VGA all over that are much cheaper but I don't know if a HDMI->DVI->VGA will work. I use a small LCD part of my distributed system. It only uses composite video though.

Sounds lik you need one of the Sony OLEDs. 11" and a HDMI input, sounds perfect, no problem at all.

Budget? What do you mean budget?

More seriously - Viewsonic has one under 16"...

Price is good, size is about as small as I've seen. Coby also has some, but it doesn't appear to support HDMI.

If it's just AppleTV you want to monitor, you may want to try a HDMI splitter before your A/V receiver to send HDMI to the monitor full time and to the receiver full time.

For 160 bucks, that might be the way to go! I like the HDMI splitter idea too, as the AppleTV is really the only source I want to monitor outside of the projector.

I think I have some shopping to do!

Any HDMI splitter you guys recommend?

HDMI->DVI->VGA
No, this won't work.

HDMI is all digital, so HDMI to DVI-D is a good conversion.

DVI to VGA is actually DVI-A to VGA, using the analog portion of DVI... which is the same as VGA (more or less).

To go from HDMI to VGA you would need a product like the HD Fury2 which has HDMI input and component (or VGA) output. It is a true active 'converter' not just a cable.

About $180 or so...

Weird that the Coby 13" LCD doesn't have HDMI while their 15" in the same series does.
