Small room speaker suggestions

I just revieved a Denon AVR-1801 for Christmas and I'm looking for speaker suggestions. I have a Sony HD TV w/Comcast digital cable so this will be a HT system. I'll also be attaching an XBox and a DVD player.

The room is a little odd. It's about 16x24 but the room is functionally divided into two 16x12 rooms side by side by duct work and a support beam. The TV is centered along a 12 foot wall. The ceiling is about 7 high.

I'm not looking for an extreme high end system but the Denon looks to be a little more than the usual entry level receiver so I'd like to do it a little justice with the speakers.

Space is a bit of a concern so I'm looking to mount the speakers off the ground is possible in the front but they have to be off the ground for any rear speakers.

I'm looking as much for suggestions in speaker size and configuration as well as brands and they don't have to be the latest.

TIA for any suggestions!
Mike

How much can you spend on your speakers (including the subwoofer)?

Thats the same size as my room. I have found towers and bookshelfs to work well. I use Energy C-1's for mains and they can walk around this room.

For me, I think this room is a little long, and having side surrounds would really help the surround sweetspot.

For subwoofer. I have used 8 and 10 inch models in here and the 10 inch subs worked better. I have a 12inch on the way.

As for brands, you need to listen to some stuff and report back with your findings.

A budget would help too.

PS - Remeber to use high quality listening material.

I'm looking to keep this within $300 to $400 but not all at once. I'm going to have to bargin hunt like crazy.

My problem is I know nada about the whole HT world so I'm not even sure where to start.

There's another question. What should I use? I'm a jazz fan and one of my favorite discs is a live club recording, clinking glasses, coughing, drink ordering and all. It's also 1950's and mono.

Is there anything special I should look for is I'm going to use a more modern recording?

Your budget is pretty tight for a 5.1 HT system. You won't find much at that price for 5 speakers and a sub. I suggest you check www.audiogon.com or ebay for used. HTIB is about all you're going to find new in that price range. If your comment means you don't have $300-400 right now, you'll have even more difficulty putting together a good system. The only option I'd recommend, if that's the case, is to watch ebay for used or vintage speakers such as Boston Acoustics, JBL, Mission, Infinity, etc. If you see a couple of bookshelf speakers in good shape, get them and add to the system as you can.

If you can go a little higher, this is a good system, but it's $559 shipped and includes a 20' sub cable. http://www.hsustore.com/vt-12-stf-2.html

Good hunting and welcome to the forum.

Inexpensive speakers.

I would also look for Athena Audition Series or BIC venturi both of which you can find in the $100 per pair price range.

I think you will get better deals on www.audiogon.com than ebay.

also why not just buy the front two and then add the rest as you go on. that way you can get good speakers.

Let me start by saying that this can somtimes be a biased forum, and that i am biased in the way of Polk. IMO for the price range you are looking at i would suggest looking at crutchfield for the Polk rm6005 set-up 4 satellites, 1 center and a 10" powed sub for $299 that is hard to beat. With this said shop around, most all have a satellite/sub set-up for under $400. But as far as brand goes audtition them all and let your ears choose.;)

Four Polk satellites, verses two Wharfedale floorstanding, and two bookshelf. Or four Wharfedale bookshelf speakers. There is no way the Polks can touch these Wharfedales.

I was not trying to get your panties in a bunch, nor was comparing to any other brand. The man asked for SMALL speakers of the ground, and i was mearly offering my opinion just the same as eveyone else here.

I am not offended.:) Nor are my panties in a bunch. My wife is walking just fine this morning. On the other hand, I just wanted to make sure the deal on the Wharfedales wasn't missed. It's an incredible deal.:D
