Small receiver for SPDIF in and 5.1 out

I'm in a small RV. I have two front and two rear speakers built in. No subwoofer, or whatever it's called. I have the built-in raw + and - wires from the speakers in place to hook up to a receiver (assuming that's what I need). The only input I want to hook up to this receiver is the S/PDIF line-out from my Polaroid HDTV. Naturally I can live with other in/out ports, but the above listed are vital.

Another little constraint I have is size. The opening in my A/V wall where I'd like to put the receiver is 3" high by 12" wide. On many receivers the infrared remote receiver is too high for my window. Space behind the window is at a premium, but I can accommodate a foot and a half front to back, if necessary. Air space around the sides is not huge, as this bin also serves for some storage.

Any suggestions for a receiver? I don't mind buying the right unit and throwing away speakers, if necessary.

Wow, 3"? I don't think it's gonna happen, sorry.

This was a recent introduction, a slimmer receiver for those who demanded such things, and even though it is a lot slimmer, it's still 4-3/16" high.

Side note, I'd look into the possible negative effects of using the TV optical output. Many/most TV's strip surround sound. It's most likely going to be downmixed 2ch. If this is your ONLY connection available, you can get all 4 speakers to work by using a matrixing/postprocessing mode, but it still ain't the discrete channels available to you via DD/DTS.

As for the IR sensor, you might consider some sort of repeater with a spider that sticks on to the display, or RF doing the same thing. Something like this might be up your alley, depending:

The SPDIF audio out is the only audio out on the TV. The TV also plays music CDs, movie DVDs, and other media. Basically what I need is a little more volume than the TV provides, especially when I'm playing a movie in it. And, of course, this RV has the built in speakers, so any future owner would want to be able to take advantage of that, most likely. It used to have a little auto CD player to which very obsolete original equipment was attached, but that didn't have SPDIF input for the digital TV.

What is a "matrixing/postprocessing mode?"
