Ok, if I have this correct, from all the crossover setting info I've been reading for movies I want bookshelf speakers for movies and for music I want full range towers?

The reason I bring this up is audioadvisor has the old Athena bookshelfs at a great price. Three pairs of AS-B1 for $99.95 per pair and a AS-C1 for $99.95. That's $399.80 shipped!

All have the same 1" tweeter and 5.5" woofer. With the right sub that souds like a good "entry level" 7.1 system for movies. I listen to music alot and do not want to sacrifice 2ch/allchannel cd or 5.1 dvd concerts.

What I am asking is why buy towers if your just going to cut off the low end any way?

BTW They also have AS-B2's for $149.95 per pair and AS-R1's for $125.00 each for more possiblities!!!

This was in a big thread awhile ago, but I'm too lazy to find it and link it. If you're doing straight up HT or always listening to music using the crossover, then it really doesn't make sense to get a full range tower. However, if you like to listen to pure 2-channel music and use the mode on your receiver/processor like Yamaha's Pure Direct (which cuts out all non-essential processing and routing), then you would want full range speakers. This is often why people opt for full-range mains on their HTs. This allows them to do double duty. Of course, if you have the money and room, I would say go for two separate systems. Make a killer HT system with subs and satellites, and then a killer 2-channel system with a pair of full-range speakers.

There are few speakers that are capable of true full range performance, so "full range" is usually a misnomer. Even tower speakers would be set to small in a normal system, because the sub should be handling the lowest stuff most of the time, though you could set them to large and no sub for music.

A speaker that covers lower can allow you to use a lower x-over (if your receiver/processor is so equiped), which can have the benefit of somewhat better lower midrange performance (depending on the speakers), and less localization of the sub as well as a narrower operating range for the sub.
