Slightly better than TV speakers

I'm doing the full-blown HT in a dedicated room. Want to also get some better sound in the family room for daily TV watching. Don't want to go crazy (don't even want to use a receiver if it can be avoided). Looking for suggestions to hook up some small speakers (directly to the TV if possible) and have a high WAF.

Considered Polk soundbar (but seems to need receiver) or two OrbAudio speakers. Any other thoughts/suggestions?

thanks

You could consider a 2.0 computer speaker setup. You'd need a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mini to 2 RCA cable though because typical computer speakers use the mini jack for line-in.

Yamaha has something like Polk's surround bar that has processing and amplification also, so no receiver is needed. Cost is higher obviously though.

My parents use this, a Cambridge Soundworks (Read: Creative) 2.1 system. It works great for them and is very simple to use, and actually doesn't sound too bad for their size. I think it cost around $100.

The Yamaha sound projectors really do work amazingly well and if you don't mind the cost then that is definetely what I would recommend. The YSP-900 is the new low end model. You may be able to find the YSP-800 at a discount since the new one is coming out.
