Hey all,

As the title suggests, my wife was talking to her sister last night, and she told her that they had just bought a new 52" TV and a Bose surround system!!! Yippee!!

When I heard my wife say the word Bose, I just kept saying, "Bose is crap!" So my wife told her sister, "Darien says Bose is crap." I don't want to hurt their feelings, so how do I tell them how bad Bose is and that they need to return it and buy something else, but tactfully? I sent her an e-mail with a link to the Bose frequency response thread. I also offered to help them choose another system.

But her husband is a moron and makes a LOT of stupid purchases. She married the shmuck, so she's gotta live with it I guess. But I just hate to have someone in my family waste money on a crap home theater system.

Then again, when they come over and hear mine, it'll probably make them hella jealous. :D

How do you tell then Bose is bad? You already did.

You told your wife. She told her sister. Now let it lie. If they have any questions, be there to answer them, but let the muggles enjoy their overpriced toys.

Don't be surprised if they don't bite though. For some, Bose is exactly what they want. An easy to operate appliance that fills their room with unobjectionable sound and disappears into the woodwork.

Chances are they won't read the link you sent, and even if they do, they won't care. Don't waste your time unless they start asking questions.

You guys are probably right. My sister-in-law's husband has talked her into a lot of hare-brained decisions: (1. moving to a big house in the middle of nowhere, that is about 1-1/2 hour commute from their jobs, 2. Saving money by having a civil wedding, then about a year later, taking equity out of their house to pay for a HUGE regular wedding). The guy's an idiot, but he's obviously good at talking her into things.

Buying the Bose system was probably his idea and he probably wouldn't be willing to be talked out of it anyway. Whatever, I'm sure they'll enjoy their crappy system.

At this point it's probably best to keep your mouth shut. If, at some point in the future, they ask you why you said that, just tell them that for the same money they could easily have gotten "more" (do not use the words "better" or "nicer"). And leave it at that, unless they ask.

Unless they return it, basically anything you say is going to make you seem like a snob to them and hurt their feelings. You can't win, so don't play.

I agree with what several others have said - don't discuss it any further.

Meet them at a local audio store to demo some real speakers.

You can be blunt without being rude.

"I think it sounds unrealistic and compressed, like .mp3's or radio signals, which is why I don't buy anything from BOSE. THey're a marketing company first and foremost, not an audio company"

That should do it.

Everyone has different tastes, maybe they just like the way Bose sounds. If you have a MACDADDY system and they get to hear it, and they like it, you will get to say those words every bro inlaw love to say " i told you so"

Untill then, it would just be you forcing what you like, on them. Its noble to want to help, just dont say anything that would ruin the relationship you guys have.

Peace,
Tommy

Take up a collection

... and buy her an upgrade for Christmas.

Can they take the Bose back? Usually Bose has a return trail period.

Just pull one or two objective Bose reviews and show them. Don't try to convince them directly; it won't work. Let them read them independent review and when they say "Is does't appear tha Bose is a very good speaker system after all, what should I do? .." then be ready to jump in.

Don't let it bother you. You don't have to listen to it.

As markw indicated. Don't push the issue further. I have similar issues with my sister and her fortune tellers etc.
You say something to help and you become the sinic and the bad person.:)

Right about the only way you can handle ...

Is to objectively point to a third party aritcle, but even that can backfire and as you said you become the cynic, not Bose, and you alone are the bad guy!

The best way and probably the only way is to let them hear your system. And when they ask tell them waht you have. Still you need to be very careful, not to diaparage Bose in the comparison.

I am gonna guess that they have already heard your system and did it didn't make an impression on them.
Your system is no doubt better than a Bose but Bose has you beat in the marketing department. :D

Most people just don't care about audio, or video for that matter. I don't know about other people but it took me a while to be able to distinguish the differences x-over settings made. At first I just couldn't tell and that was with me changing the settings and listening for changes. I think there are a lot of people who are like that to begin with and have no interest in learning to #1 listen and #2 learn. So God bless 'em tell 'em that those Bose sure look good. :)

Really, if they cared to know they would know.
